Bell Sympatico Users

Anyone else hitting the 5gb download limits? I am touching cloth for both uploading and downloading....... Its a sweet 7.95 per gig overages, what a deal!

wannabeapornstar 08-14-2002 06:05 PM

siwtch to another dsl provider

B40 08-14-2002 06:09 PM

Anybody switch yet?

WiredGuy 08-14-2002 06:10 PM

I bullshitted my way out of the first bill. I mean first they email my sympatico email account of the notice of price change and I haven't checked that email since I started using them over 1 year ago. Next, I get a bill for $128 or something like that instead of the usual $35.99 (I get a discount from the regular $39.99). Anyways, I BS'd my way out of the first bill and will probably cancel since 5gb is BS. I use like 1gb/day.

Have you guys found any alternate providers that don't cap or at least have a higher cap than 5gb/month?

I dont think there is anything DSL wise, Rogers but they suck and are putting a limit on soon as well....... I like bell over rogers since I havent had 1 minute of downtime with bell since signing up

B40 08-14-2002 06:14 PM

When Bell had the $20 unlimited long distance and cancelled it me and my roomie talked up a $800 bill. We called them and told them we didn't know they had cancelled the plan, which we didn't - and they charged us only $20. Then we switched.

There's this site here that lists most of the ISP's, but I'm waiting for someone to switch to a company before I do.

Check out that link. There's lots of DSL providers. Most require you to purchase your own modem, or rent theirs for a ridiculous amount.

Just don't know which one to switch to.

try look.ca dsl

Looks good except for that $150 they make you pay to purchase the modem - and you only get 2 phone filters.

WiredGuy 08-14-2002 06:18 PM

I'm using GT Internet @ my office here, its more expensive but its also a 3MB connection (3X faster than symaptico). I think it's $120/month for 20gb cap, but 3X faster than sympatico and no BS upload caps. Then again, these are also office rates, maybe they have home rates which are cheaper.

Yeah my problem is not finding a new ISP, it's choosing which one. I don't want to switch to one and have to switch again b/c it sucks.

That's why I'm waiting for some reviews or referrals.

Martin 08-14-2002 06:36 PM

Yeah this 5gb cap is garbage.. Gonna check that link out myself..

Turned the bastards down 2 weeks ago! Put wireless
cards in everything I own and now run off the AT&T
link in basement for biz and personal.

Turning Sympatico off was great...

Rep: "So what could we do to keep your business?"
Me: "Give me back what I signed up for instead of
fucking me up the ass, it's not like I'm running a server
or any peer to peer off the link."
Rep: "I'll put that on the close tag."
Me: "Make it a direct quote!"
Rep: "Where should I send the confirmation of the
cancelation? Your email?"
Me: "Yah sure, you just turned it off right???"

how much is that per month? and what did the wireless gear set you back?

Running a full link is not for the faint of heart or
pocket book. Running an ether extention for me is
about $650 a month, but I'm very close to Queen st. so
it's a short haul. I also had my own router that had
WAN ether ports on it so I didn't have to lease one.
You'll have to get a quote, I've seen ether extentions
in Toronto range from $500 to $5000, as long as you
can get it in your area.

Old box at Factory Direct (College and Spadina) for
about $200, loaded up with FreeBSD. Ether to the
router, Orinoco silver in a TI carrier card, couple of
custom transceivers on the serial ports. $90 for
wireless, $50 for the carrier.

1 homebrew wireless router and 4 boxes hooked up
is about $800.

Anybody try Sympatico High Speed Ultra service?
Feel the difference?

Speed:
Up to 3 Mbps downstream
Up to 640 Kbps upstream

Bandwidth:
10 GB download
10 GB upload

$69.95/month :(

Backov 08-14-2002 09:06 PM

Ya, I've got their high speed extra with static, it's running me like $149.95 a month, but well worth it.. No caps at all, 3mbps downstream, 640kbps upstream.

When/if they cap it I will put in a T1, as the cable company already booted me for doing 3gb/day when the cap was 6gb per month.

Cheers,
Backov

I have heard nothing but good things about TeraGo

I may even switch very soon ... I have no real complaints with ROGERS cable ... but this sounds like too sweet a deal !!

Bob Carrick 08-15-2002 06:06 AM

I myself use the 3 meg Ultra service. As for switching ISPs last month Bell Sympatico lost 20,000 customers in a 30 day period. So yes people are switching.

You can see end user ratings at http://www.canadianisp.com when you select a specific ISP and get a feel for what real users think about that ISP.

MadDog 08-15-2002 09:22 AM

A friend of mine who was on Sympatico did some research and came up with IStop - http://www.istop.com/residential.html

Reasonable prices for 15GB with lots of off-peak (if you disconnect and reconnect before raping the system so it registers you as off-peak), and the modem rental is cheap (but he bought it for $149). At least it's $CDN!

Also, a static IP is available if you run servers and such.

I'm on Rogers so I'll have to make a switch eventually, but right now I'm making the best of it :)
