Real World Windows VISTA questions...

Hey guys...

Who here is using Windows VISTA now...?

Is it good? is it bad?

What works?

What doesn't work?

Let's shed light on something that is very important.... VISTA is about to take over...

How will it affect our business?

I've heard that alot of drivers just don't work for it...
Is this true...?

Give us details please

V_RocKs 04-06-2007 03:28 AM

It works...

But if you do anything that requires more than 10-25 half open sockets (like port scanning, proxy scanning, pretty much anything that uses threads to send out requests of some kind) I would steer clear of Vista.

Currently I know of no patch for this feature (problem) in Vista.

It consumes more memory and Aero requires a lot of graphics processing. If you use 2 - 4 gigs and a good card you should be OK.

If not, you are in for a slowdown.

The only good thing is virgin sockets.... Data transfer is a bit quicker.

What is virgin sockets?

Thanks for your reply dude

dakota1358 04-06-2007 03:48 AM

Can we plug that virgin socket?

V_RocKs 04-06-2007 04:10 AM

Let me correct myself... I meant Virgin Stack.

Microsoft reworked the network stack in Vista. It basically does more faster now.

Forget downgrading to Vista, I don't know a single person who has said they are glad they did.

Rochard 04-06-2007 07:16 AM

I have Vista installed on my laptop and it works fine for me. No issues with drivers yet.

Slick 04-06-2007 07:34 AM

I bought Vista and I actually love it. For me, everything I use works fine. I think that the only problem that I had, if you'd want to call it that, was my WS_FTP Pro didnt' work and they didn't have a Vista version on their website, but they did have a beta version that you can get if you call them up directly, it works just fine, all of my hardware works perfectly.

I think that it's a nice change after spending 1,000s of hours sitting in front of XP.

i've had vista for a month.. im still waiting patiently for the patented windows crash...

teksonline 04-06-2007 08:23 AM

the creative xi-fi fatality extremegamer professional series card has been nothing but a nightmare on it.. had to ebay it and go back to on board sound

rock-reed 04-06-2007 08:50 AM

Nice input guys...

Any more ??

rock-reed 04-06-2007 01:29 PM

Anyone else here actively using Vista?

does Sony Vegas work with it?

What about Adobe Audition and Photoshop?

bl4h 04-06-2007 01:46 PM

I use xp and vista. I use vista a lot more because its simply better. I mean its XP + bag of chips. I dont have any problems with it.

Vendzilla 04-06-2007 01:49 PM

I get my new laptop today from Dell, can't wait to play with it

GrouchyAdmin 04-06-2007 01:56 PM

V_RocKs is using words he doesn't understand. He's trying to say [urlhttp://www.microsoft.com/technet/community/columns/cableguy/cg0905.mspx]this[/url] has made all the difference in the world, which, really, is just offering a slightly different stack that works in slightly different ways (IPV4 and IPV6 are separated.)

I was not impressed with Vista's graphical and memory intensive nature. I went back to XP, and plan on using XP until it's no longer feasible - I'd rather get work done than play with zoomy windows.

Photoshop works perfectly fine for me in Vista Premium.

Martin3 04-06-2007 02:04 PM

No problems here. Running x64 ultimate.
Like any new OS you better do a software and hardware compatibility check before installing.

GrouchyAdmin 04-06-2007 02:04 PM

Damn url tag. I missed it. Whoops!

Is it possible to turn off all the graphical bells and whistles of VISTA...

In order to save proc. time?

JDog 04-06-2007 02:11 PM

Quite a few drivers aren't Vista ready. Some printers and other stuff might never work for Vista. A lot of companies aren't going to upgrade drivers because of the price to get them certified by Microsoft and be a certified driver.

I'm am steering clear of going to Vista and migrating to Novell SUSE on both my desktop and laptop (already migrated).

bl4h 04-06-2007 02:28 PM

Oh I wouldnt upgrade my company to it (if i had one). It requires a lot more resources than XP, but of course that will scale with time.

Vendzilla 04-06-2007 02:31 PM

One thing I figured on when I ordered my new laptop was to get 2 gig's of ram, hopefully that will be enough

Probably, but what's the point then? might as well stay on xp then..

I run with 2 gigs. its the sweet spot

Its better with memory managment. It USES lots of ram but thats not necessarily a bad thing

Also windows vista != aero. Thats a highly advertised feature but theres more to it than that. Yeah you can turn it off. Not to sound like a fanboy but youre spreading nonsense :]

Vendzilla 04-06-2007 04:53 PM

well i just got my new laptop and so far I would have to say I like the new graphics, haven't done much yet with it, but I think it's a keeper at this point

GTS Mark 04-06-2007 05:10 PM

I'm on a brand new XPS laptop with Vista and it's running great.

Pretty cool so far, however I'm only 30 minutes in :)
