Free Paysite Tip - A Great Reasource

This month has been a real positive one with the tradeshow and the growing success with my partners at sterlingcash.com and digitalangeldollars.com (plug plug!) so I haven?t had a ton of time to write. But I did come across something that I think every webmaster should be checking out. This falls strongly under the ?knowledge is power? category. The good folks at www.thebestporn.com have a site for the viewers to do reviews on and they conduct these polls that are just about the most telling thing I have seen in a long time.

Have a look at http://www.pornusers.com/browse_polls.html. They have asked great questions here like ?What?s the most irritating thing to you inside a site?s member area?? and ?How much do you trust a site?s tour pages?? I strongly recommend everyone who is serious about running pay sites have a look at these polls and the results? And the big lesson here is to not let your ego get in the way of interpreting the answers! So many of us have a hard time letting go of our own notion of how things should work or feel the need to educate an ill-informed surfer but ultimately the best sales are going to come from catering to the perceptions (and misperceptions) of the surfers at large. So again, take these polls and glean the knowledge from them. It?s golden nuggets for sure!

No prob guys. We always have to remember to set our own prejudices aside and let the data speak for itself. I went through this this big time with choosing video formats.

I haven't got all the sites conforming yet but our top delivery platform is to have a page with an embedded streaming FLV with links to download WMV high and WMV low and then an IPOD MP4 link. I'll also do 2mb WMV low clips if I think we have enough slow speed users. The big thing with the FLV embed is that it streams in fairly quickly and people seem to use it to preview a clip and then d/l the WMV if they really like it. I've got a whole tip on that blog for video settings and the software that's being used, etc...

Well those polls could be interesting once you get more voters.
Right now it doesn't show anything.

Jace 04-04-2007 01:10 AM

another good one

Would you signup to a pay-site with DRM downloads?
Yes, doesn't bother me. 0% 0 Votes
Yes, if content kicks ass. 13% 4 Votes
No, too many restrictions. 83% 25 Votes
What's DRM? 3%

Jace 04-04-2007 01:10 AM

yeah, i agree, why are there only like 30-50 voters per poll? thebestporn HAS to get more traffic than that

are the polls not put in public places?

The only Caveat I'd add here is that most iusers don't realize an embedded vid is one format from another. So like with the FLVs they like the preview but they would have no clue what it is.

The XVid/Divx was the issue for me because I prefer the quality but it just bore out not to be the way to go. All the Mac guys I do vido editing with love Quicktime of course and it's pretty ubiquitous as to what it'll play on but still the surfers just don't go for it the same no matter how good an argument you wanna make. Stats don't lie (although they can be misinterpreted!).

Yah just 2mb size files to D/L. That was actually something Duke from DukeDollars wanted to do and it just stuck with me as one of the many smart ideas he had. It seems to be a nice option for users with slow connections.

Sarah_Jayne 04-04-2007 03:23 AM

ah, that looks like it could be really useful
