Cable sharing

I have 3 computers sharing a cable line thru a hub
I want to have different IPs for the 3 machines - how do I do it?

HomeGrown 08-13-2002 05:23 AM

I dont think you can do it with cable sharing. If you can it has to do with subnetting, good luck with that :winkwink:

You have to talk to the cabel provider, unless their dhcp setup is really slopy. This is if you mean a internet ip not an internal ethernet ip

You have to request the 3 IPs directly at your ISP. Then they will get assigned to each computer that's hooked into the hub.

Kitty you are with Telstra right? You need to have a separate account for each pc - I am not sure how many users you can have with your current plan

HS-Trixxxia 08-13-2002 05:34 AM

:thumbsup to what Equinox said. You must request it from your ISP. Depending on your hub, but I think most will allow up to 5 pc's to connect with different ips.

Add a second NIC to the primary PC

That NIC connects to the internal HUB network
The Primary NIC connects to cable

Use software like WINGATE to share the internet internally (allows u to monitor etc)

Run an private IP addressing scheme on the internal network

yeah use wingate and you'll have some unexpected "visitors".
I wouldn't use it, many hackers scan for wingate machines...

install Red Hat Linux on an old pc and setup a local masquerrade.

Nurgle 08-13-2002 06:26 AM

hehehe thats why i said "like wingate" :)

anyway should always install some F/W.. linux box would be better... but im guessing not convient for Kitty :!

cheers

Hey all thanks for replies

Cirrus - yeah I'm on telstra (unfortunately no optus cable on the coast  )

Just checked their website - looks liek i can have multiple users - athough they have no support for cable sharing networks

so i'll call them in the morngin and see how it goes

thanks again all

get a router with a DHCP
it'll get its own unique internal ip,,
i got 3 pc's sharing right now

Nurgle 08-13-2002 06:41 AM

Kitty noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

you dont need to tell Telstra what ure up to.. multi users wont help u anwway.. they wont give out multiple IP addresses from memory
I am on their ADSL.. just share in a manner like i described and it will be all GOLD.. if your not sure how... find a nice fellow on the east coast who can help you.. sorry im in SA :)

You cant but they will have diffrent private ips

CDSmith 08-13-2002 08:26 AM

Yes, what playa and nurgle said!

I'm with the @shaw.ca cable. If I were to contact them they'd want an extra $10 per month per computer.

Tell them nothing!

Go the route of the router.
