Does your link code get removed ?

Here's a clever scam to watch out for.
A surfer clicks on your link and gets taken to the member's page where he decides to sign up.
His credit card gets declined but he's offered alternative billing.
He fills in his email address and immediately receives an email with a sign up link.
He clicks on the link, signs up and becomes a member.
What's wrong with that ?
If you examine the email you might find that the link is now a direct one and that your link code has been removed.
The sponsor gets 100% and you get nothing.
What can you do?
The only way that I can think of testing this is to try signing up for a trial and see what happens.
Some of you might come up with another way that won't cost you 50% of a trial membership.

I will try to get specifics. I make most of my money on the web by correcting the English on people's websites and writing texts and reviews etc.

Most of my work comes from Russians and they told me about this scam today - not that they're doing it but to be careful of it.

I don't think that the scam can work if the link is a direct ccbill link or similar and think that it can only work if one uses a member's page and their links.

I might be wrong and feedback would be appreciated.

Not a big deal to attempt to sign up for a trial and to see what happens.

If the sign up works then all is well and and you'll get half of your money back anyway (approx) and if it doesn't work then you get the hell out of there and cut your losses.

And if it doesn't work - then please tell people here asap !!!!

I bet this happens at tons of sponsors, some less complicated than this.

1. Send better traffic that has valid credit cards.
2. Most alternative payment gateways don't integrate w/ most backends very well for affiliate tracking, because they have to leave the site in order to join in most cases.

Alternative billing is there to capture joins for the program that would have otherwise not happened. If that alternative billing was not in place, you wouldn't have gotten the join either. I don't understand what the problem is?

Voodoo 04-28-2007 01:53 PM

Alternative billing accounts for a very small % of actual joins, and this is in "addition" to standard joins. Without it, those joins would cease to exist.
