I don't think it's affected quite the same.

bluemike 03-28-2007 11:21 PM

I don't know why anyone would be a newspaper anymore except to wrap fish and chips in it.

How they make money I don't know.

Who would pay big bucks to advertize in a newspaper ?

Swish 03-28-2007 11:25 PM

What can I say... it's a series of tubes. :1orglaugh :1orglaugh :1orglaugh

Advertisers still pay millions a year to advertise in them, but their newspaper budgets keep dwindling as they spend more and more on internet or cable. And newspaper websites don't make as nearly as much as print.

SomeCreep 03-28-2007 11:28 PM

newspapers and magazines, for a long time now

DatingGold 03-28-2007 11:30 PM

I think magazines won't have it as bad as newspapers. but yeah still affecting them.

Xenophage 03-28-2007 11:32 PM

Thanks. And how about Google and sites like youtube ?

Did you ever buy anything advertized on them or even know somebody that did ?

I'm glad of course that the advertizing makes so much available to us for free but when I see how much Google costs to operate (there's a fabulous clip around of how happy their employees are) I can only but wonder whether advertizers get their money's worth.

lalika 03-29-2007 01:25 AM

Yeah I got a call from the Telegraph the other day asking me what newspapers I read, told them I dont I read it all online and from her reaction she may have heard the same comments a few time before.

Sarah_Jayne 03-29-2007 03:56 AM

Most newspapers knew it was going to go that way since about 1997. I read a paper everyday (as most of you know) but I read them online. Any paper that hasn't worked hard on a web presence deserves it.

Many are working hard. Take Gannett as an example. They own USA Today.com; a very popular site. They are also a part-owner of Career Builder. Still, earnings are under extreme pressure as they own 90 newsapers and 1000 other daily publications.

This is an $8 billion/year company. Not so easy to make enough on-line advertising sales to make a dent in the decreasing circulation numbers.

Oh, I know they are. Until my husband died we ran a local online newspaper and we were doing it since early 1995. So, we got to see the big papers suddenly take notice.

Which is why I said that any paper that hasn't tried by now has only themselves to blame.

Ivana Fukalot 03-29-2007 11:46 AM

sometimes i look through magazines but no newpapers.

LustyBucks 03-29-2007 11:58 AM

I do read magazines (real, paper one, not online) and don't read newspapers. But suppose there are many people who do so. They're used to paper, they don't like to read from the monitor.
And yes, somewhere deep inside there's a strong beliefe in a printed word opposed to the internet.

J. Falcon 03-29-2007 12:04 PM

BlackCrayon 03-29-2007 12:07 PM

the ottawa citizen is getting very pathetic in its attempts to get people to subscribe. they'll give you free newspapers on the weekend and then send you a bill saying you you owe xx amount. i'm sure some people think they actually have to pay it.

Then the newspapers should be moving their business online and expanding their customer database. If I owned a newspaper, I'd publish the exact same content as what's in the newspaper but do it online.

Then give free access you the newspapers subscribers and also a limited free access to the content for non subscribers. The real money comes in when they start selling advertising.

Hhhmmmn. never saw that coming.

vvq 03-29-2007 02:06 PM

isn't there digital paper in the works or something?

rotowa85 03-30-2007 08:46 AM

i think its just natural progression, in the same way that computers killed typewriters, calculators killed the abacus and cars killed the horse and carriage. just the way things go

kane 03-30-2007 10:15 AM

A while back the guy at the post office told me that if it wasnt for ebay and other sites like it they would be in trouble. There are still people that mail things, but many people now send email instead of letters, pay their bills online and are not subscribing to magazines and stuff nearly as much so they have been hurt really badly.

These days the post office will give you free boxes and come to your house to pick them up if you ship stuff with them. Since letters are dying off they are starting to go after companies like UPS and Fedex and offer a similar service.

SPACE GLIDER 03-30-2007 10:17 AM

who didn't see THAT coming?

germ 03-30-2007 10:42 AM

newspaper sucks anyway.

it feels gross :P

bausch 03-30-2007 10:43 AM

There's also no need for me anymore to buy tabloids like Us Weekly and In Touch... Why when I can get images and the story the same day or even a few hours after it happens and straight from the SOURCE. Plus the unedited papparazi videos are amazing, much better than anything you will find on Extra.

Plus with the internet you can look at celebrity pictures high resolution and see every single PORE, every single imperfection, every single FRAME of their movement, every single hair on their forearm, you can even see if they have something stuck between their teeth, plus you can analyze everything in depth with your peers on message boards, plus the designer and make of their outfits will have been identified in seconds, and if it so pleases you, you can buy the exact same outfit from the same designer in your exact size.

The internet is truly amazing.

seeric 03-30-2007 10:46 AM

the only thing i still read is books.
