San Francisco Bans Plastic Bags

San Francisco, California, has decided to put an end to the question, "Do you want paper or plastic?" The city has moved to ban the use of plastic bags at all city grocery stores.

The Board of Supervisors complained that the petroleum-based bags clutter much of the streets and endanger wildlife due to the fact that they cannot decompose. Many recycling machines have been gummed up by these bags as well.

The head of the Environment Department, Jared Blumenfeld said, "The ban would help move the city closer to its goal of diverting 75% of all waste produced from its landfills by 2010."

Many plastic bags do decompose these days. They have nothing better to focus on in tootyfruity ville...?

specifically it's oil-based bags they have banned which still allows the use of decomposing bags instead. that kind of "green" plastic bag is rarely ever used for reasons i am not aware of.

As far as I know, the reason id dead simple: Higher production cost for decomposing bags :Oh crap

First it was paper bags but that was wasting too many trees. Plastic was the way to go.
Now plastic is evil. Whats next, ban condoms?

What are we supposed to do, carry a cloth type shopping bag to the store like grandma did many moons ago?

Ya no kidding. Now there are too many trees, they put off C02 when they die and from their old leaves you know, and that causes global warming...

lesbodojo 03-28-2007 02:42 PM

I love living in SF. :)

pornguy 03-28-2007 02:46 PM

Nothing like killing a few more trees, because people are so stupid that they can not put trash where it belongs.

I have no idea who Dvae is, so sorry..

but sticky, i have to say. wow buddy!

I agree with having issues in something like this, you have a right ot your opinions.. but i just want to point out how funny i think you two are.

Yes, bring the cloth bags to the checkout!

Yes, it's worth NOT getting paper/plastic/whatever..

You know, my Grandfather once told me that one tree would produce more paper than i would ever use in my life.. i looked at him confused, and he then told me that it takes 100s of me to make one tree, in time anyways

Can you think of an alternative?

Sly 03-28-2007 02:57 PM

Interesting issue.

One thing I'm finding kind of funny... they're using litter as one of the justifications. People can't throw away their trash? Hehe...

You have to laugh this silly shit or else you'll go insane.
With politicians things can get completely out of hand.

mattz 03-28-2007 02:59 PM

wow, interesting, not really

Sosa 03-28-2007 03:05 PM

I can't stand paper bags. Plastic is so much easy to carry

actually, yeah. many grocery stores around here sell durable bags, they look like paper bags but durable like burlap sack material. just keep some in your truck and take em in the store when you go shopping. its not difficult.

Never mind that there are more trees today than were 100 yrs ago.

topbucksdarlene 03-28-2007 03:15 PM

:thumbsup Wonderful! It's a start anyway! :)

Scott McD 03-28-2007 03:20 PM

They are charging us for plastic bags here, and asking we re-use the same bags over and over again.

Yeah because the bags are so strong, they can be used again and again... :disgust

Doctor Dre 03-28-2007 03:31 PM

Definitly a good idea
