The UFC bought Pride ?

I hope they don't change the pride rules.

shoeaholicanon 03-26-2007 01:11 PM

what is that?

Still a rumor...... kind of

Dana White said no concrete deal was in place this weekend.

But mmaweekly said a Japanese newspaper reported it confirmed.
Quote:

The new company that will operate Pride apparently won't be run directly by UFC or Zuffa, but will be its own entity owned by the Fertittas, so that Pride and the UFC will operate separately. It is also being reported that the two promotions will hold a joint super show once per year. SportsHochi reports that Pride 34 on April 8th will be the last Pride show run by DSE.
So, will Pride be a Japanese or a United States promotion? Apparently, Pride looks to continue to do shows in both Japan and the United States. Intentions are to still have the Lightweight Grand Prix starting in May, with the GP consisting of three shows, all taking place in Japan. The annual New Year's Eve show is still in the plans to take place in Japan. There are also plans to do 2-3 more shows in the United States this year.

There will be a press conference held in Tokyo, Japan at the Roppongi Hills Arena on Tuesday, March 27th, which will be open to the press and fans alike.

Well it will be cool if they merge it.

SxDx 03-26-2007 01:19 PM

a ufc/pride supershow would draw some serious money.

Metalsound 03-26-2007 01:21 PM

I love Pride GO MIRKO !!!

Yakuza beware!

The Japanese media is reporting that the Fertitta's are purchasing less than a 50% stake in Pride, with the majority control in the hands of an ownership group ran by a Japanese TV exec. The goal is to get them back on Fuji TV within a year, which I guess Fuji told them would happen if they had a new ownership group with a clean state. I don't think I believe anything I hear until the deal is finally announced. Either way Pride is expected to be ran as a separate entity and none of the rules will change.

This is giving me a hard-on. A supershow once a year would be awesome. Champion vs Champion!
And at least now thanks to Couture and the Future champ Mirko Crocop we'll be spared the waste of time that would have been Fedor VS Sylvia.

QuaWee 03-26-2007 03:04 PM

It's still a rumor. But, it was the Ferittas (sp?) brothers forming another company with Fuji to run PRIDE. Also, K-1 is partnering with Elite XC. There are also rumors that K-1 is buying Cage Rage
