Just a little note on (google) sitemaps: They help getting sites crawled, especially new sites with deep link structure, but they won't ever improve your ranking in any way.

If you have an established site, strong links and good rankings, suddenly adding a sitemap will hurt your rankings ! Only use them on new sites, keep them forever if you want, just don't mess with existing sites/blogs.

Anyone know of a plugin that would allow me to have certain banners or links only appear in a particular category? For example say in my sidebar I've got a "featured site" type of ad spot, in the Latina section I'd like to have a Latina site ad appear but in the Black section I'd like to have a Black site etc.

you don't need a plugin for this. Just create sidebars for each categories...

OP, sorry to jump in your thread, but I'm wondering if one of you can help me out real quick. My wife's been pulling her hair out all afternoon just trying to put a metacafe embed code into a post, and no matter what we've tried, it's just not happening. Anyone have a suggestion? I'm not sure how many people realize that commercial sites should pay for Akismet? It's not a matter of being Mr. Honest, but that they offer three levels of service and their free users requests get the slowest responses. Not good if you have a busy site...

IMO a combo of Bad Behavior and Spam Karma works better and keeps everything local. BB is useful for people with comments off but who get the comments file hit directly, because it blocks direct access.

What are the advantages of Akismet over a Captcha-method?

ABP is what i use.
