who would trust a webmaster named 'vladik'? i know i wouldnt

ldinternet 08-09-2002 12:51 PM

Darren is telling the truth... first time for everything, eh? ;-)))

The 'Vladik' character wanted to sell me some mature content, claimed to be a Russian photographer and said he'd have some samples ready in a few weeks. You know that feeling you get when someone wants to rip you off. Maybe he didn't know that I'm extortion proof. ;-)))

When arranging something, it isn't good to use ICQ only. Everyone knows this, it is common knowledge -- but here is something for the n00bs out there, maybe looking to buy their first content sets. I usually do one or a few of the following:

1. Person contacts me on ICQ, we discuss the product.
2. I ask to see their website with the ICQ number on it.
3. I take a look at the whois info, search a few boards (AWI, GFY, PCBBS) to see that they've not been scamming, and make sure that the site hasn't just been thrown up by searching Google (use the following search string: domain.com site:domain.com) and Web Archive. If it isn't indexed... most likely they've just thrown the site up. :1orglaugh
4. Ask them to send me an email with the details using their email address on that domain - if they say their site is domain.com, I will expect to see an blank email from [email protected], to which I will reply asking them for their details, to which they will reply to me with their details. That just about confirms that they really do work for or own the company in question.
5. Also ask for address and telephone number if in doubt... a real content provider will willingly provide these if you are unsure about making a purchase... just so you can make a quick 10 second call to confirm their details. Take note of the accent, if you know what I mean! ;-)))

Another good one, if you are geniunely unsure, is to give them half upon arrangement and the other half upon delivery. Most would be unwilling to do that even if legitimate, but for those that do, it is better to lose only half of the money than all of it.

Buying from a real content provider won't guarantee that you get ripped off, but it is safer to buy from Ounique, than "Dmitriy's Amerikan Content Mall".

Take it as you will... just some quick snippet for the n00bs.
