Andrew Riley faced 128 felony charges Tuesday that included theft, vandalism and intimidation, but he is no adult; he is a seventh grader.

Riley, 13, is accused of burglary, theft, stolen property and vandalism. It stems from a crime spree that the Athens County assistant prosecutor said lasted a year.

"He's so young, we need to try and get him rehabilitated through the system," said Assistant Prosecutor Keller Blackburn.

Blackburn said the Full Brooks Cafe was one of his many targets. Owner Miki Brooks said the restaurant has been robbed twice.

"It sort of took all the air out of me the first time," said Brooks. "The second time, I couldn't believe it."

His family did not deny he has been in trouble, but they said he could not commit so many crimes.

"Honestly, you know, we are baffled by all the charges," said stepfather James Blake. "We suspected a few could come out of this, but nothing like what's been going over."

The charges came after a fellow student went to police, then Riley allegedly beat up that student and now faces charges for intimidating a witness.

His stepfather said Riley had a rough childhood.

"He's our oldest, you know. He's our first born and he's been through a lot," said Blake.

Riley is in a juvenile detention center and his pretrial hearing is scheduled for later this month.

How about getting the kid some serious counseling, and put him with a caring foster family? Rather than locking him up and throwing away the key or god forbid in your insane scenario executing him? It’s obvious that he needs serious help and he needs to get it as soon as possible.

This isn't your typical 7th grader who has been a naughty boy. He definitely needs to do some time for 100+ felonies. I'd say until he turns 16.

Then release him on probation terms that if he gets arrested even one more time he is locked up until he turns 21.

His parents should also have to pay restitution.

You wanna kill a child????

ePorn 03-14-2007 08:34 PM

juvie then back on the streets and before he turns 21 he's going to have been in jail several times over. it's a traditional case of fucked up existence that will with 99.9% certainty not change and spend more time behind bars, and on our tax dollars, than in freedom contributing to society. Brings me back to one of my favorite movies "No Escape" (Ray Liotta)... Prison Islands rule, far out in the ocean where they can make their own fucking rules.

You don't punish a child with obvious issues by putting him in jail (or juvenile detention). He's THIRTEEN years old for fuck sake! Get this kid some serious help and get him help fast, otherwise you are looking at someone who in his adulthood is going to be *much* worse than he is now. It’s not too late for him to become a productive member of society but if he gets thrown away at this young of age it sure the hell will be too late when he gets out.

I agree with making the parents pay restitution, and I’m not against making the kid himself pay for his crimes, just don’t put him in jail or juvie where he will not get the help he so surely needs.
