Sea Salt Vs. Iodized Salt

Any less health risks using seal salt like the myths say?

I'm getting old and I love salt. Some say that sea salt is less dangerous in a health sense.

whatta ya think?

LilBro 03-13-2007 08:07 PM

sea salt is da bomb

notabook 03-13-2007 08:07 PM

If the only salt you intake is sea salt, and don't get enough iodide from other sources, then yes there is a severe health risk.

Doctor Dre 03-13-2007 08:07 PM

My mom read in a scientific article that Sea Salt is better for your health...

Here is my take on sea salt vs table salt: table salt is created using additives and extremely high temperatures. The additives make the salt later longer, not clump together, stuff like that. Sea salt is always (almost) pure and unrefined which is why it's better. I think they say most of the additives in table salt cannot properly be absorbed into the bloodstream and therefore builds up in your arteries. I'd think the most important thing when buying salt is to look for 'unrefined'.

miss_twisted 03-13-2007 08:46 PM

sea salt all the way.... I dont use anything else

What did I say that was blatantly wrong?

The sodium we consume from food and water is only part of the problem. The highly refined nature of common table salt is the other part. Although our bodies are not designed to handle large amounts of sodium, healthy individuals usually can tolerate some excess sodium if it is in a naturally occurring form that our bodies can readily use or excrete. Commercial table salt used in our food and to soften water, however, is the furthest thing from this ideal. During the refining of table salt, natural sea salt or rock salt is stripped of more than 60 trace minerals and essential macro-nutrients.

Commercial refined salt is not only stripped of all its minerals, besides sodium and chloride, but it is also heated at such high temperatures that the chemical structure of the salt changes. In addition, it is chemically cleaned and bleached and treated with anticaking agents which prevent salt from mixing with water in the salt container. Unfortunately the anticaking agents perform the same function in the human body, so refined salt does not dissolve and combine with the water and fluids present in our system. Instead it builds up in the body and leaves deposits in organs and tissue, causing severe health problems.

Two of the most common anticaking agents used in the mass production of salt are sodium alumino-silicate and alumino-calcium silicate. These are both sources of aluminum, a toxic metal that has been implicated in the development of Alzheimer's disease and that certainly does not belong in a healthy diet. To make matters worse, the aluminum used in salt production leaves a bitter taste in salt, so manufactures usually add sugar in the form of dextrose to hide the taste of the aluminum. Refined sugar - as I explained in my previous book, Get the Sugar Out (Harmony Books 1996) - severely disrupts the equilibrium of the body and is associated with the development of more than 60 diseases.

Whether you consider the minerally unbalanced condition of the salt we use, the anticaking agents that prevent salt from doing some of its most important jobs in the body, or the chemicals and sugar that are added to it, table salt should be avoided because it is, without a doubt, hazardous to human health.
Okay, it's not a real study, but if you google for a while you'll find numerous pages that say the same thing. Not fact, but it's enough to make an impression.

Enough said.

You want to get 'Maldon' brand sea salt. It's from the U.K and in flakes rather than crystals. Amazing stuff...you'll never use anything else.

less salt is the best

luv$ 03-14-2007 12:13 AM

My buddy swears by it.

All water intake is mixed with sea salt, he won't drink water without it.

I don't know personally but he's pretty fuckin healthy for smoking 2 packs of nonfilters per day...

Table salt has nothing in it that makes it, in your own words, "build up in your arteries". Perhaps you are thinking about cholesterol?

Table salt is primarily made up of sodium and chloride (same as sea salt). The main difference in table salt from sea salt is it contains trace amounts of iodide; if you do not get sufficient iodide intake, you are subject to various health problems (most commonly goiter) and eventually lack of iodide will lead to death. Table salt also contains some magnesium carbonate to prevent the salt from sticking together.

Table salt content is at a minimum 95% sodium/chloride, the remainder of which is magnesium carbonate and iodide (usually either potassium iodide or iodate). Typically, the majority of table salt is made by shooting water into salt deposits (a salt mine), then evaporating the slurry until just the salt remains.

Sea Salt contains up to 4x more magnesium than table salt has in it. It also has a rather large amount of sulfate in it which may give it its more unique taste.

Sea salt is a must on carne asada.

The Sultan Of Smut 03-14-2007 01:55 AM

I like that sea salt isn't quite as "salty"

Onixia 03-14-2007 01:57 AM

iodized salt is better !

Nodtveidt 03-14-2007 04:28 AM

Sea salt contains far more than just sodium chloride; it's one of the most complex natural chemicals on the planet. It even contains a trace of gold. :)

lalika 03-14-2007 04:34 AM

sea i guess :)

Amadora 03-14-2007 07:08 AM

Sea salt is more natural, so mu choice is sea salt.

That's because his tastebuds are gone from smoking so much, and he needs extra flavor. :2 cents:

MissMina 03-14-2007 09:37 AM

Yes sea salt is alot better for you. Or so they say :)

NinjaSteve 03-14-2007 09:59 AM

Using sea salt in your eye drops is the best!

Z 03-14-2007 11:14 AM

I'm a big sea salt fan for anything I eat and a big epsom salts fan for the bathtub. :thumbsup

:2 cents: If it can't be properly absorbed into the bloodstream, how can it then build up in your arteries? - think about what is the bloodstream!

Then it would come out in your shit...
The deposits he's talking about are kidney stones - the one and ONLY place where salt attacks. Drinking plenty of (non-diuretic) fluids is the key to preventing kidney stones, high salt or not :2 cents:

JimmiDean 03-14-2007 02:10 PM

I love sea salt, taste is far better.
Howver I just read a report last week that says the average North American gets six times the daily dose of salt required without adding any to his or her food.
So I would guess adding any salt is not real good for you.
