escorpio 03-13-2007 04:09 PM

By charging $4.00 for a cup of coffee.

OY 03-13-2007 04:11 PM

By fooling us all into thinking that VENTI was better than LARGE.

AaronM 03-13-2007 04:11 PM

They just bought a chain of stores in Portland called "Coffee People." I preferred Coffee People's stuff over Starbucks. Now they have shut down all the Coffee People locations. Nothing but empty building there now.

Shitty thing to do, IMO.

SomeCreep 03-13-2007 04:17 PM

Starbucks created a lifestyle.

bDok 03-13-2007 05:46 PM

i didn't like starbucks for years. I caved and bought into it. Now it's like a strange comfort thing. It's like i can be in almost ANY place and get my fix the exact way and style i'm used to. Not to say I don't hit up a cafe other places... but in the morning when I NEEEED the fix I don't mess around if I have the choice.

I think they got in right when the seattle sound was big. it was kind of a place for everyone into grunge to chill. sort of like a gen x hangout. Then it just took off from there. Then you would always see celebs being shot by the paparazi with a starbucks coffee in their hand, and by chance the label was showing etc. Just was one of those companies that got in at the right time. Sort of like those old paysites with those shit tours that were doing 1000 joins a day back in 98.

baddog 03-13-2007 06:09 PM

I have to say, after reading the article, it is a pretty smart move.

I have purchased more CD's and books at Starbucks in the last year or two than everywhere else combined.

Please don't attempt to use logic which you don't possess.

Yeah, that one always gets me. I always ask for SMALL, MEDIUM or LARGE, then they look strange at me and says the VENTI or TALL size and then I repeat what I just said until they just do it.
It is damn annoying. That said, I like the coffee and I dont mind paying 4 bucks for it. Then again, I am an idiot.

Why is it people pay $100K for a Mercedes, when they can buy a Lexus for half the price and actually end up owning a better car? :)

You dont drink coffee I knew there was something I didnt like about you lol

HeadPimp 03-13-2007 07:30 PM

They also have the chain store advantage that they are everywhere and you know that you will get the same cup of coffee in one store that you will in another. You don't have to risk getting a crappy cup of coffee flavored drek at a non-chain store.

You would think so, but it isn't exactly accurate.

As I travel around the country I find myself in many places that don't have a Starbucks, or the one that is within a 50 mile radius is in some Border's Bookstore or something.

While they may have been given the recipe, they certainly have not been given the training, and there is a definite difference between the one I get here in LA and the ones I pick up in OK or IN.

aico 03-13-2007 10:34 PM

Fast?? They've been around for quite some time.

Rappers put out one album then start a music company...

I really think Starbucks became popular in part because of all the celebrities shot by papparazi drinking Starbucks.

Britney used to be ALWAYS photographed drinking a frap and you can always see the Olson twins carrying Starbucks and loads of other celebs.

Carrying a Starbucks became a sort of "fashion accessory", like a purse. I am totally serious.

Some people think they "look cool" when they are carrying Starbucks.

This is the REAL reason why Starbucks got so big :

http://img364.imageshack.us/img364/3...scelebsea2.jpg

A lot of people follow their favourite stars everyday on all sorts of forums and blogs and everytime they see a celeb carrying a Starbucks it reinforces it that it's cool. Starbucks is basically getting free advertising.

Not many people can afford a $2,000 purse like Lindsay Lohan or a pair of $700 shoes like all the celebs but everyone can afford some Starbucks...

If you have a product you want to become popular, if you can get someone like Lindsay Lohan get caught by the papparazi using or holding it or wearing it, the next day thousands of people will rush out to buy it... Seriously.

96ukssob 03-21-2007 03:37 PM

its trendy and one of the first of its kind. personally i like coffee bean better

bausch 03-21-2007 03:39 PM

I forgot to post, above you see Britney, Nicole Richie, DJ AM, Jessica and Nick, Olsen twins, K-Fed, all drinking Starbucks.

SleazyDream 03-21-2007 03:39 PM

addictive drugs :2 cents:

bausch 03-21-2007 03:49 PM

Also, I was just reading on another forum where they were saying that for young people in college they also like to carry around a cup of Starbucks as a type of fashion accessory.

I guess to some people it's really something that makes you "look cool" like you "fit in."

I am absolutely serious when I'm saying it's a fashion accessory. Especially when so many celebs are SO OFTEN photographed holding a Starbucks.

I think the Olsen Twins kind of started it. They were photographed daily holding Starbucks. A LOT of people follow the Olsons daily because of their fashion/style and I think the Starbucks think got more popular cause of that. They are considered fashionistas now.

I witnessed this firsthand on a style forum...

Snake Doctor 03-21-2007 04:48 PM

It's all about the atmosphere. It's not a coffee shop, it's a hangout. If you provide the right ambience you can charge whatever you want for your product and people will pay it.

The steak in a 5 star restaurant doesn't taste better to me than a steak from outback, but the price is triple or more in the 5 star restaurant.

Same principle here.

Peaches 03-21-2007 04:52 PM

They are building one near me in BFE. You know they're dominating the world when they sell it here in no-where-land. :helpme

hottoddy 03-21-2007 04:53 PM

Damn, I didn't know they bought out Coffee People here! That explains the bordered up building near my office. Sucks when someone is so big, they just buy and close the competition. How long until they buyout Peets (the guys to trained Starbucks). I call Anti-Trust shenanighans!

salesman 03-22-2007 01:41 AM

hmm, starbucks, starbucks - doesn´t that sound like a sponsor name ? :)
