Question for hockey fans

I just saw this thing about game suspensions to players that attack others, I'm not sure what you would call it.

Anyway, I understand that the fights and whatnot are part of the fun and excitement, I'm cool with that. But what really struck me is the few players they highlighted ended up getting suspended for maybe 15-20 games, while many of the "victims" never played hockey again. Seems like an awful high price for a little fanfare.

Why is this tolerated? A guy loses out on a measley 15-20 games while the other player loses his career. That just doesn't seem right.

like that high stick to the neck the other day
I mean come on

Mutt 03-11-2007 03:25 PM

any deliberate act to injure another player should result in a suspension of at least the same amount of time the player that you injured is out - if his career is over than too bad, your career in the NHL is over too. there are other professional hockey leagues in the US, Canada and Europe, apply for a job there if they'll take you.

hockey needs to bring back fighting though - hard for non-hockey people to understand but the fighting actually kept this other bullshit down and the amazing amount of serious injuries in hockey these days is partly due to the fact that the league no longer really allows the fighters to be policemen,

True, let the Semenkos, the Proberts, and the Domis sort it out. This cowardly stick shit needs to stop.
And I agree with stripping an entire career if the injured party can never play again.

in hockey there are rules and a code that all hockey player used to follow but the league wanted to crack down on the fighting so now this type of stuff in happening the stick play the cheap shots the way it is supposed to be you hit our guy you play dirty your next shift you gotta go with the next guy that comes out and asks you to go him but these days guys think they can do something dirty and not have to fight well that is not hockey and now people are headhunting guys that don't take it when they have it coming now the head hunters are the guys getting all the bad wrap and suspensions but the chicken shits who are running and not following the hockey code as just as much to blame which is why i just heard that the league is going to loosen up the instigator penalty for 3 instigators=one game suspension to 5=suspension so that the tough guys can do there job and protect there best players

skinnay 03-11-2007 07:40 PM

the instigator rule was the worst rule in hockey ever. now people are just getting hurt with all these retaliations.

They can do things legally as well, for instance bertuzzi has a pending 20 million dollar lawsuit against him. Because the guy he attacked cant play anymore.

again that guy had it coming took out Naslund on a cheap shot five guys the next time they played tried to go him and he ran and ducked finally Bertuzzi caught up to him and settled the score that guy would be playing hockey today if he would have maned up and dropped his gloves

Granted I don't know the dynamics, the players, or what this guy did... unless he ruined another guys career, I don't see how he "had it coming".

Please explain.

well what started the whole thing was the guy who got hurt put Vancouvers best player out of the game with a hit behind the play it was a cheap and dirty hit and it resulted in an injury and the lost of there top scorer for a few weeks now this is part of the game and it happens but it is well understood that you run our best guy you better be ready to drop your mitts and go the next time you meet that team on the ice thats hockey thats the code now if you refuse to drop'em your a fucking pussy don't do the crime if can't do the time type of thing so this guy a week later ran from again five opportunities to drop'em either give or take a beating spend his 5 minutes in the box and it would have been over but instead he ran from fights and taughted the Vancouver player by smiling and laughing at the bench after he ran from all the fights which again is why I say he had it coming now did Bertuzzi take it to far yep should have just popped him and let him fall no need to ride the guy all the way to the ice

northboy 03-11-2007 08:42 PM

simon got 25 games, I thought he deserved 25-30 , so 25 is about right. The Rangers player was playing the next game, but it could have been worse.

See all that I'm cool with and understand. But taking somebody out with a stick to the neck seems pretty extreme. Could potentially kill someone?

I am chauncy 03-11-2007 09:02 PM

oh there is never any reason to keep a guy in the league that every uses his stick like that

Spunky 03-11-2007 09:10 PM

Simon deserved it.taking a stick to the face is unexcusable..he could have lost all of his teeth.or had his jaw wired shut..that was vicious

VeriSexy 03-11-2007 09:39 PM

Well each time they make a long suspension it sets a precedant (benchmark) for other attacks similar. He can't just give him a random amount of games on how he feels like.

Moore hit Naslund when he had his head down and didn't even have the puck... He deserved Burtuzzi's response, breaking his neck was just a freak accident.
