How to redirect 404 traffic on a wordpress site?
 

I tried adding a 404 line to the htaccess, but that doesn't work.

Well it worked if I deleted the symlinks or permalinks or whatever info that was in the htaccess, but then that would mess up my SEO efforts.

I tried using an http meta refresh on the 404 template in my wordpress theme but that didn't work either, just brought up a blank page cannot be found.

Anyone know how to redirect 404 traffic offsite with wordpress? I'd appreciate the help.

Most themes have a 404 page template. Just modify that template to include a php redirect.

You may also want to try adding the 404 line in your htaccess page that controls the permalinking

In your wordpress template area, create a page called 404.php - do whatever you want in there. That is your 404 page. Since wordpress 2.0.6, it even actually delivers a proper 404 code as well, which is a nice touch.

I got it figured out, I was trying to do a meta http refresh and that didn't work because it was a php page.
Found some php redirect code and that did the trick.

Now that this is taken care of I can spend more time waxin me carrot

Yup that's why I said php redirect. They rule. Glad you got it sorted. You may also want to run a url redirection script if you have a lot of blogs. This way to can have all the 404 redirects point to one url and just edit that page if you want to change things up.
