Best Part about Shawarma?
I'm just throwing this out there, because I fucking LOVE Chicken Shawama. It's a weekly indulgence of mine (I call it an indulgence because I usually eat 2 or 3 at a time.) But in your opinion, what makes Chicken Shawarma so special? Is it the seasoning on the meat? The magical garlic sauce? The delicious assortment of vegetables wrapped into? And lastly...do you like your pite grilled, or plain when you get Shawarma?
For those of you who don't know...Chicken Shawarma is basically a chicken pita. But it's slow cooked on a vertical spit, and has all sorts of great mediterrainean spices in it. Loaded with lettuce, tomatoe, turnip...and LOADS of garlic sauce! |
i think it's the slow cooking of the meat that is the secret.

Having lived in the middle east I will tell you what makes chicken shawarma the best. In the middle east, we dont use pita bread, its too thick. We use something very thing, similiar to a tortilla or lavash bread.
So what makes the shawarma so damn tasty there which I havent been to replicate here yet...the bread, the garlic mayo sauce, and the damn little pickle they put in it. I dont want anything else in my shawarma but that and the chicken, maybe a tomato every once in a while. I found a decent place here in Santa Monica but its more of a plate than a wrap. Great garlic sauce though. |
The meat for shawarma is marinated 24 hours in a special sauce. That´s what makes it different. Pita, veggies ect. are pretty common.

I like it when the meat is a little over cooked .. so it's got little pieces of burnt chicken .. Mmm Mmmm good .. oh and keep those beets away from my pita! I rather a little Hariff and Houmus with some lettuse tomatos and Onions ...
The very best place to get them is at the Central Bus station in Tel Aviv .. Oh god how I miss those ! |
Best on I ever had was in Amsterdam!
|
the garlic sauce, the pickle, and the fact that the pita is crispy makes it way better than a normal pita. i love lamb also. i usually get one lamb, one chicken, and an order of hummous.
|
never had it

There's a place here in the L.A. area that does it fantastic...
