The Great Global Warming Swindle

First I want to make it clear, I don't own a tin foil hat.

Did anyone see this documentary on Channel 4 in the UK last night?

Basically, if what they were saying is true then the reasons that we are given for global warming are a load of bullshit.

None of the guys on the program denied there was a rise in CO2 or a rise in temperatures, they just dispute the commonly known reasons.

Some of the points made:

Earths atmosphere is constantly changing temperature, as we all know, so changes over fairly short periods is basically irrelevant because it's been happening since the earth first existed.

Most of the rise in temperature over the last 100 years happened during a depression where there was less industrial activity and therefore less CO2 emissions, and during the boom in industry after WW2 there was actually a drop in temperature.

The models used to predict climate change do not include the sun or the clouds. Both of which according to the program have far more effect on our climate than us. They also predict twice as much CO2 in the models than is actually present. Only one variable in a model has to be wrong for the model to be wildly wrong.

Sun spot records over 400 years can be accurately used to predict the temperature, the guy saying this claimed he made a load of money by betting against predicted weather trends using his knowledge of sun spots.

There was something about solar radiation I think and it somehow has an effect on cloud formation, this could be linked to sun spots but i can't remember. But anyway, more clouds = warmer earth.

It also went on to describe how the Global Warming is now basically an industry in it's own right, their are endless groups doing research with multi million pound grants, with environmental journalists reporting their findings. It's in their interest to keep it in the public eye to maintain their money, noones going to pay someone millions of pounds for them to turn round and say sorry we were wrong there's nothing out of the ordinary.

It was a pretty convincing argument, i'm not saying it's true but it does make you think. I probably haven't explained it very well but it's worth a watch, here's a couple of clips I found

What needs to happen is both sides need to get together and discuss it on TV so they can explain themselves and question eachothers theories.

You can also check out Michael Crichton's book "State of Fear". It's more or less the same information with a story, sort of, inserted in it.

State of Fear is an excellent read.

Cold hard facts.

I think most lay people start with a belief in one view or another and then find the "facts" to support their predisposition. That is partly how people approach many things, but in this instance, the science involved is also way over the heads of non-scientists.

There are distinguished scientists on both sides who cannot agree, but even among the larger number who warn that increasing pollution will have dire effects, there is disagreement about exactly how. A year or two ago, for example, I saw a program presenting the view that extra cloud cover will push us into a new ice age. A program like that only has to be well made, to cause concern to anyone who is in no position to argue with the experts.

I don't pretend to have judged whether there will or will not be global warming. In any case, I shall not be around long enough to suffer its consequences. I simply have the view that no-one claims there is any benefit to pumping pollution into the environment. In my lifetime alone, I am aware of waters in which, if fish still survive at all, they are no longer safe to eat; of respiratory diseases affecting many more people, more seriously; etc.

In other words, there are many reasons to be seriously concerned about pollution, whether or not you believe the consequences will be cataclysmic.

It wont matter after Dec 29th 2012 anyway - as soon as the earth enters that center of the Milky Ways Black Hole gravitational field and the tectonic plates start shifting like they did 28000 years ago the last time earth made this journey, the entire planet will be screwed - amazing how the I-Ching and Mayan/Aztec "predictions" and calendars all end at this date?? :1orglaugh

did the guy argue about the the recession of glaciers all over the world and drowing polar bears? Because it's really hard to convince people that these types of things are "normal" and "happen all the time".

I LOVE sheeple.

They did show satellite images of the poles, showing how they expand and contract with the seasons, and believe me they expand and contract a huge amount. Just cos you see a polar bear on an iceberg or some ice falling off a glacier doesn't mean shit, that stuff happens every single year.

Just to clarify something for you, Glaceris all over the world are NOT receding. Some have, and in fact, some are getting larger.

More people believed that Y2K was going to end the world...

What year is it now?

Its pretty hard to get upset about this in March....I could have used a little global warming this morning :0

76 today. Im starting to believe in global warming again. Funny how they get pretty quite during the cold snaps haha.
