Is a Prisoner's Kidney worth 180 days?

Just heard about this on the evening news.

"Inmates in South Carolina could soon find that a kidney is worth 180 days.

Lawmakers are considering legislation that would let prisoners donate organs or bone marrow in exchange for time off their sentences. "

Solves 2 problems, I think... prison overcrowding, and a lack of donors for such things...

What do you guys think?

lol no way in hell would I give up body parts for 180 days in the slammer.

baddog 03-09-2007 12:18 AM

I have been suggesting Death Row be used for a parts house for years.

notabook 03-09-2007 12:21 AM

Splum 03-09-2007 12:23 AM

tical 03-09-2007 12:46 AM

Why not, 180 days isn't shit though. For a body part? Jeez.

This isn't China we're talking about. This is America. You can't sell your organs here and effectively that's what they would be doing. "Trading" your organs for time off... it's bullshit. Furthermore prisoners sentenced for hard crimes (rape/murder/etc.) shouldn't be allowed to "buy" any time off period.

At first I thought it was a good idea because I mistakingly had the idea in my head that a kidney donor's life expectancy is shortened... so it'd simply just be a matter of them exchanging days.

After a bit of research, turns out that's generally not the case... there's no life expectancy change.... so I don't really know anymore.

They'd basically be paying the cost of pain and surgery and recovery (during a period of time that's already contained in their prison sentence) for those 180 days...

I dunno... if a prison's main objective is to reform, maybe it could be argued that those that have reached a point where they're willing to help someone else to such an extent (even if they know what they're getting out of it from the get-go) are a bit further down the path of enlightenment than other prisoners, and deserve an early release?

Maybe I can understand why society doesn't want to legalize organ-selling on a grand scale... but, ethically, they are your organs... if it's to be said that a woman has a right to receive an abortion because it's her body, then why can't someone sell an organ when it's their organ?

I think a kidney has to be worth at least 1 year, maybe more…

China is more capitalistic than the US in that regard.

Ok, so why can't people sell their kidney? And the hospital that gets it for free charges $50,000 for the kidney and operation?

I am personally not a doner for that exact reason. If they would get the operation for free, I would donate. Or if I got a chunk, I would donate also. But if someone is going to be proffiting off of someone elses sufering im just not going to do it.

Good maybe they can start offering stupid murderers immediate release in exchange for a heart and two lungs! :)

Wow I have to agree but that is one hell of a can of worms to open.
