Recent events have led me to take up an interest in internet security and got me thinking.

Which one of these cats could do the most damage?

I say Smokey, what do you think?

that's a tough one ..both have mad skills. I do get the feeling that Fris would be faster to use them for EVIL ...lol

But just for the record i like them both :)

Smokey has my respect. fris is hot under the collar but most capable. A hard one, but I voted...

I voted Fris, mainly because I have seen the way he thinks with his GFY private detective agency and all, it shows a logical mind.

heh funny poll. i think fris has a bit more tech savvy mind when it comes to security hard to say who to be more worried about though..

I had a girlfriend once who was darn evil , i bet she would put both me and fris to shame and she wasn't tech savvy at all. it was her demeaner and voice.. She was deadly at the art of reverse engineering with her voice.. She could get yahoo shutdown by calling the right people. :1orglaugh She would mimic people and it seemed to work " hi this is maria chardi from the justice department , we have an emergency warrant to shutdown such and such servers." etc etc

Server security has alot to do with knowing what holes are known and patching them . I'm not good at that at all , i work the opposite way. I dont know fris all that well but from what i understand he knows alot about protecting servers wheras i focus on finding the flaws.

Either way no need to be worried about either of us prob ( as long as you stay on our good sides :1orglaugh )

Real danger wise - really neither, the net is filled with some real people that could do real bad damage to lots of servers/networks/stray machines.. Not that the people do, but they do know how and probably have looked.

Overall though, smokey is smart cookie. I don't see him as a hacker, he does what all great active minds do, he finds things - learns about it and tests them.

I have no idea what Fris can do. If he knows something he wouldn't be known for doing it on here.

ya some are real malicious, i know people who have got their machines hacked, but just the index is replaced, the malicious ones remove everything.

First off , you dont know me so you don't know my skillset.

I have gotten access to some of the most secure servers on the net so i think your kinda talking out your ass a bit :winkwink: then again i guess it all depends on what you consider "1/2 way secure" . Perhaps you don't consider youtube or yahoo "1/2 secure". ( and your prob right about that )

If i had started the thread i could see your point in trying to bring me back down to size , but i'm not here trying to claim im a wizard of hacking or anything. I'm sure there are at least 100 people with more knowledge about server security than i on gfy, thats hardly the point.. Bill gates is smarter than i , but i wouldnt be worried about bill rooting your box :)

Fact is most ( 99%) of servers can be downed with little tech savvy at all.

Theres always an easy way to solve these questions though.. point me to your server and give me permission to tinker and if nothing goes down , then at least you know your secure :)

Are you mostly self-taught, or did you take any formal IT courses/classes?

I seen some pretty good tricks from Smokey 2 or 3 years back and If I only knew 1/4 of what he knows.I don't know Fris very much and didn't realize he had the tech knowledge.

self taught, only computer classes i had was in highschool, we only had novell/turbo c/dbase/turbo pascal/watcom pascal then. no internet.

the stuff they teach you in college is pretty sad.

you are pretty much up shit creek if you want to goto college then become a solaris or aix admin, or anything cisco related

pretty much you have to learn on your own, or take courses, and cisco and solaris can get pretty expensive.

I chose Fris. But not based on either ones abilities.

I chose Fris based on the fact that I believe he is less ethical than Smokey.

Does that mean he will bring your server down? No... Just means I think Smokey is less curious about what you have and more interested in creating his own.

Some one should set up a server and have a little contest just for fun...

fact: both are unaware of the gfy malware exploit loaded via iframe last time. FUD for at least another good 5 months :)
