The song you're talking about is The Dropkick Murphys. They have some good stuff. Flogging Molly is some great drinking music too.

CaptainHowdy 03-08-2007 06:10 PM

You may want to check Flogging Molly also...

Everyone says its murphys but is not naming the song. the name of the song is "shipping up to boston" and Flogging Molly kicks ass. I see them everytime they come to AZ.

Ahhh.. yes. Cool. Any good heavy bag pipe music?

Thanks for the links so far. This music is definitely a nice change of pace. I get tired of listening to American Pop shit all the time. And because of the content I edit, I get more than my fair share of hip hop.

Dropkick Murphy's one of my Favorite Oi! Band!

Dropkicks kickass

IWantU_Jeff 03-09-2007 01:14 AM

was guna mention the bagpipe thing, but also that wasnt really 'irish rock' & everyone mentioned the DM's. I didnt see anyone give the name.. dont fully remember it right now but its 'something.. boston' but with a bit of searchin if you like that stuff you can find.. theres a few, DMs, Pogues etc..
if you like the genre.. (its not exact) but go to Pandora.com & put them in, you'll get similar type music.. I have a DM's channel on mine.. good tunes from diff groups too...

Also throw in Neck, Mutiny, The Porters, Shane MacGowan and the Popes (post-Pogues era), Sharky Doyles (the Chicago equivalent of the Dropkick Murphys), The Killigans.

Possibly the greatest Irish punk rock band of all time is Stiff Little Fingers. But other than the voice and the lyrical content, there's not much Irish about it. Just raw punk rock.

And a couple of good scottish/scottish influenced bands are Real McKenzies and Flatfoot 56.

You can find a decent list of Irish/Celtic bands on the Shite'n'Onions website.

http://www.shitenonions.com/links.html

And saying that bagpipes are somehow exclusively scottish is ignorant. Bagpipes have been used in Ireland for hundreds of years and they are considered a part of traditional irish music. Every bit as much as a fiddle or tin whistle or uilleann pipe. Scotland doesn't have a monopoly on bagpipes, you know.

And let's not even get into the topic of where the Scottish people originated from or the fact that Ireland used to be known as Scotia, the Latin word for Ireland. And the area that would become Scotland only became so because Scots (from Scotia) migrated there.

The Pogues are actually English, but they do (or did) rock...

I haven't lived in Ireland for a couple of years now, but we did have some great bands like The Stunning, The Saw Doctors and some that I've forgotten.

Northern Ireland had Stiff Little Fingers, Therapy, Ghost of an American Airman, etc...

Try the Hot Press magazine site, they should have some info and what bands are around at the moment.

http://www.hotpress.ie

or maybe paddyrock.com for American/Irish rock

I don't mean to give you a lesson in Irish culture MaDalton.... but the Irish version of the bagpipes are called Uilleann pipes.

The fiddle is not unique to Ireland (it's just a more folkier version of the violin).

For sure - Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly ;o) Love them both!!!

sharp 03-09-2007 01:39 PM

I like Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly

Clark 03-09-2007 01:46 PM

I'm not sure what makes the Pogues English? MacGowan of Irish parents, though born in England, and their music is mostly about the Irish/Ireland.

anyhow..saw them at the Wiltern in L.A. a few months ago WITH MacGowan. The show was amazing although I can't figure how he's still breathing.

Flogging Molly is always great drinking music.

germ 03-09-2007 01:48 PM

i just saw flogging molly at the house of blues last week.

definitely check them out.

Great Big Sea is Canadian and they aren't even close to punk.

Dude... you of all people knew I grew up in Dublin. All you gotta do is ask.

I'm starting to get offended that you never ask me anything.

I have been collecting so much info over the years for moments such as this, that if I don't use some of it, I'm going to feel like my life has been a waste.
