firewalls are bullshit
i just caught a trojan in my machine.. it got my attention because zonealarm kept shutting down.. i checked the task manager and there was process called: kernel32.dlI
some programs couldnt connect to internet either, i thought it was a winXP fuckup. i killed the process and it went back to normal.. i checked the file and it turned out to be a trojan.. it could just turn off my firewall that easy.. zonealarm, piece of shit.. grr.. i hope there is no damage on the system.. :feels-hot |
fuck that silly stupid software firewall bullshit man.... get HARDWARE. :winkwink:

fucking hackers are smart as shit. Have you ever tried black ice?
|
How did you get a condom caught in your firewall in the first place!??

Software firewalls are useless. Go out and buy a cheap ass router with NAT and you wont even have to look at that spam ZoneAlarm banner when you boot up cause everyone knows you didnt upgrade it :winkwink:

I can't believe in late 2002 that anyone is still using BlackIce.... might as well just burn your computer and get it over with..... :1orglaugh
|
have been using a snapgear router in the office.... so much easier in the long run than zonealarm and am thinking about one for my home cable connection

exactly. hardware is the way to go.
some virii nowadays will disable your virus scanner(s) and software firewall(s) if you execute it... |
|
Hardare is the way to go :thumbsup

I have an external firewall/router combo and my computer still gets scanned repeatedly. Not quite as much as when I had nothing externally but it's still too much for my taste. Zone Alarm Pro is still a good last mile protector. Definitely upgrade to pro however you can. The 2 versions are totally different.
|
Amp, you mention hardware, what would you recommend? I have 4 computers running, and have zonealarm and norton running on all of them...What should I get to protect my computers?

companies like linksys and netgear make them and are quite affordable, shouldn't be more than $150. then you just throw all your machines behind the device and instantly all inbound traffic is filtered. viola. |
use zonealarm to tie up you ports - so you are not vulnerable to syn attacks and avast to scan all your processes. :thumbsup

mike said it all rosey..... good advice. Heed it. Fuck that bullshit shareware firewall crap. That's for newbs and wannabes.
HARDWARE BABY!!!!! :Graucho |
Also get a router its what I have, almost all come wiht a built in firewall :) and the linksys ones run 150.
|
I use a Linux firewall. Setup an old PII300 with RH linux and it works like a dream, never had any problems since..
|
I personally use Linksys routers... but NetGear is great too.....

here's the crux of it guys..... use a good solid hardware router/firewall, stop using that fucking crap you get from download.com, be smart, don't use shit like fucking Gator or Kazaa, delete Outlook Express and use a real email client, and in general..... don't be a fucking dipshit. You don't need antivirus software... I haven't used any since 1994. You need to use YOUR FUCKING BRAIN!

|

i just scanned the file with mcaffe (through hotmail) and it found the trojan, but when i do it with norton, it doest see it! now my anti-virus software is also another piece of shit.. |

i did that recently... i hate re-installing everything and losing my cookies

Had it happen to me one time too. I went to sleep and left the computer on. The fucker started playing my cd-rom and then blabbing some stuff on his mic (which was heard on my speakers)
I turned it off. next day I ran Trojan Remover and it turned out to be a netbus trojan. That was around 2 years ago. Now I have an ole' p200 with FreeBSD on it and IPFILTER_DEFAULT_BLOCK compiled into apache. The server is running in extremely high security mode and has all ports closed, and denying all sorts of packets (ICMP, etc). It is then routing the connection to my other 2 comps through a hub. Works like a charm. One thing was that it took me all day long to set it up. But now i'm enjoyin it :thumbsup 12:24AM up 12 days, 1:14, 1 user, load averages: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00 |
Time to do it again :thumbsup
