if you have the budget go with the kino flo's, i wouldnt give mine up for anything and since they use such low power you can run them anywhere

nice work man.

one question though - why didnt you make this with 4 lights?

one led on the bottom would definitely help eliminate ballsack shadow as well illuminate

Kinoflo gets my vote as well.

that's all there is too it. Don't skimp on the lights, get kinos and get too much and back it off some, don't get too little.

:2 cents:

vidvicious 02-28-2007 06:36 PM

Depends on how much your ready to spend .. you'll need at least 800 - 1000 for anything decent, that you can easly travel with.

there are also other alternative .. check out ebay. You can get a softbox kit for under 500$ with 1000 - 2000 total watts .. a good start

this is what I use http://extranet.mole.com/public/inde...9-1900&id=2139

tony286 02-28-2007 07:34 PM

110 watts in fluorescent what does that equal in regular lights?

Tat2Jr 02-28-2007 07:39 PM

Get daylight balanced florescents.

I've got tungstan hot lights, and want to replace them asap. Not only do they heat the house up QUICK. (About 5° in 20 minutes. About 8-10° during summer in the same amount of time), but you've got to shut all the curtains or the outside light shines through as blue. With the daylight balanced florescents you won't have any of those problems.

I've had a softbox for my lowel for over 10 tears now .. people never understood why I kept it to do porn .. when you need a nice little softlight to puch your own shadow to the side this works wonders ( I like to light a set so I can walk around freely, mostly for gonzo shoots)

Some CTB 1/4 or half qill fix that right up (gels, They are fire repelent too)
and if your lights are that hot, I'd suspect you got a hot spot dead center too .. Better add a 1/2 or quater tough spun just to be sure (diffusion won't get rid of a hot spot, it'll only bring it down a stop)

We just upgraded our video lighting. If you have the time and want to do your own research, check out www.dvxuser.com and go to the "lighting" subforum, lots of excellent info there.

I spent a ton of time reading and researching and talking to various people, what we finally decided on was to go with compact fluorescent fixtures with daylight balanced lamps. This has the advantages of MUCH lower power consumption and heat output (we can plug 4 lights that put out the equivalent of 1500 watts each into one 20 amp circuit with capacity left over) and very soft, diffused light that doesn't create harsh shadows.

The fixtures we bought were from Fotodiox
http://www.fotodiox.com/shop/product...oducts_id=4123

and then we bought 5100K fluorescent lamps separately (about $8 each)

The first shoot we did with them was in January, and the lighting is the best we've ever had... even light with no shadows, natural looking skin tones, overall we are very happy.

I think the fixtures with lamps, softbox, and stand were under $275.

Brilliant bro.

what about soft light though? you can see a tad of image burn. Maybe try to make a diffuser for them.
that would kick ass.

Oh, I use softboxes, so no hotspots, and have tried the gels. But, really it's the heat that is killing me. It's not too bad in the winter, but in the summer when it's 110°-120° outside the last thing I want to do is turn on those lights (and of course the air off). Just want to move over to the florescents before summer starts again.

I didn't use 4 because the one on top wasn't as important as the light from underneath. But also because 4 never entered my mind. Why not 8 or just 1? I dunno. 3 was the magic number. :)
