My Grandad quit smoking 40 years ago...

Hi just found out he has lung cancer.:( He's 76 so they won't operate so it's chemo and I pray it works. It's very sad.

:( :( :(

PaulB IYP 02-28-2007 10:20 AM

he's not doing to great, his cravings are mega
he is using the patch

tony286 02-28-2007 10:22 AM

sorry to hear that ,Andy Kaufman never smoked a day in his life and died of lung cancer.

JD 02-28-2007 10:57 AM

lame :( :(

Mediachick 02-28-2007 11:01 AM

Its not the first time I hear a non-smoker gets lung cancer. Back in 2000, I was living with a girl that had lung cancer at 13 years old and had to take part of her left lung out. Later on, at 26, she got eusophagus (sp?) cancer... She's doing fine now, so there's always hope.

But I do wonder about that whole cancer thing. I've known many healthy ppl who led a very healthy life ending up dying from cancer before 40 years old... On the other hand you have ppl that smoked and drank all their lives and are still among us at 85. Go figure.

I hope your grandfather will be okay. We never know how things will turn out, dont lose hope!

your gramps

sorry to hear that. good luck to him. my grandfather died of black lung ( coal mines ) used to know an old dude 85 or something healthy smoker ??? actually told me not to quit. I gotta quit smoking man... been smoking since I was 11

...

Spunky 02-28-2007 11:51 AM

That's a shame..hope things work out for Gramps :(

MrChips 02-28-2007 11:59 AM

TurboAngel - I read only the other day that unfortunately 40% of newly presented lung cancer patients are ex-smokers - with a median average of cessation of 9 years.

Basically if youve smoked (as I have) - it stays with you even if you give up.

Sorry to hear your story - but keep your chin up.

Twisted Dave 02-28-2007 12:18 PM

I am sorry for that ... members of my family died from cancer too.

It's horrible.

Lung Cancer is NOT caused by cigarrettes EXCLUSIVELY. Some people think "oh well, he died of it and he didn't smoke ... , so I guess it's not bad for you after all", but of course ... it DOES accelerate the possible risk of getting lung cancer.

Your Gramps is unlucky but hopefully he'll pull through it, as people can do. Good luck to him.

Kimo 02-28-2007 12:20 PM

that sucks :( i wish him the best of luck!

BlackCrayon 02-28-2007 12:22 PM

cancer is a horrible epidemic that doesn't just effect smokers. you never know what you might be inhaling at your workplace or even in public places. my thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family.

Theo 02-28-2007 01:20 PM

Sorry to hear it TurboAngel - take comfort that he has had such a good long run so far. both of my grandmothers died of smoking related lung disease pretty young (cancer and emphazema), and one of them was only 58.

TG Rebecca 02-28-2007 01:42 PM

its just a roll of the dice sometimes. ie. lance armstrong vs george burns

baddog 02-28-2007 01:46 PM

second hand smoke kills too

BigCashCrew 02-28-2007 02:13 PM

It's such a bad habit. 100 years from now I hope people look back at history and wonder why people even smoked.

TurboAngel 03-01-2007 10:26 AM

Thank you all for being so nice. He said he's read to fight it, my dad and I were surprised he is so adamant about beating it. My Gram died in 92 of bone cancer and we didn't think he would live long with out her but he has.

My other Grandad is now 91 he also smoked for ever but has quit for 20 years now I think.

_Richard_ 03-01-2007 10:29 AM

Jesus, i'm sorry to hear that :(

I hope everything goes well with the chemo :)
