Anybody use vonyage?
I am trying to pick a voip...anyone have any complaints about vonage ?
|
Nope. I used to sell it, and used the demo line over and over again for extended periods of time. My buddy also has it, and it works great.
Good service, good price... |

I've had vonage for three years now. Its the only phone service I have other than my cell. I turned off Sprint when I saw for myself how good vonage was. The only bad thing is that if your internet is down, so is your phone. but thats why I have a cell for backup. |
I have used packet8 in the past but am needing to set up something new and it looks like Vonage is a lot cheaper set up.

These days all I use is Skype and a cell. Skype is nice... drops calls too much for my liking though.

Vonage is brilliant. I hate talking to people on the telephone and my use is very light, but I wanted a solution which would make it easier for my increasingly frail father to call me. With VOIP I can get a number local to him, which is obviously much more simple to dial.
I tried Skype first of all, because it is much cheaper. Net-to-net calls were fine and so were international calls, but for some reason my US calls were badly distorted (I could hear fine, but most of the time other people couldn't hear me). I tried two handsets as well as taking the other steps Skype advised, but in the end nothing helped. From their forum and from Google, although many do not have any problems, it seemed not uncommon. I have had Vonage for a while now and it has worked exactly like a regular telephone in every respect. In the unlikely event my internet connection goes down, callers would still get voicemail. The only irony is that while in the UK I have a number on the exact same exchange as my father, the closest number I could get in the US was in a place about 100 miles away. So unfortunately, no-one local calling me, gets to make a local call. That apart, there has been no downside at all. |
I just got my installation package.

awesome service but 2 things....fee to change plans and fee to cancel service. i've had them for a couple of years and tried to cancel my plan since i had an unlimited mobile and they wanted me to call back on monday to cancel the service and get a fee. the csr is in manila and sometimes they dont understand when u ask them questions.

yep, Vonage is great. You can have an LA phone # and live in the boonies. Doesn't matter.

I have had Vonage for over 2 years and it absolutely is THE DEAL.
I live in Florida but have an Illinois number so my family can call me free. Plus unlimited calls anywhere in the US, Canada, Puerto Rico and Europe is included at no charge. And I have every single feature the others charge a la carte for at no extra charge. 3-Way calling, Caller ID, Call Waiting, etc., etc. Including all taxes my monthly bill is $30.01. |
I use skype and love it. Same deal with phone numbers and answering machine built in. No monthly fee. i pay only for usage. BUT i do get an echo sometimes. Annoying if Vonage does not have that then i might switch.

Yep i'll add a yes for Vonage had it for couple of years now it's cheap and works like a charm.

if you do a lot of international calling Skype looks way cheaper.

My plan is to have the phone sent to my folks and have then send it to me in the UK. So that like with Packet 8 my parents are able to call a USA number and reach me. |
Sarah, get Vonage you'll be pleased. I've been using it for like 5 or more years.

is all you really need the router thing that comes with the basic package?

I have 2 lines for the past 2 years, and am very happy with the service. Routers and Panasonic wireless phones are all on a battery backup, so short powr failures don't affect me. You can bring the router along with you where you have a high speed connection, and it is just like you were home... They also have a USB dongle phone that you can use in coffee shop, other places.... |
I have a good broadband..just don't want to order more than I have to in order to get it to work since I will have to have my parents ship it to me.

Both vonage.com and vonage.co.uk offer similar packages. You can choose any number (in your own country) as your home phone. You can then add one or more virtual numbers, either at home and/or abroad. Anyone calling these numbers pays the same rate to reach them as they would if they were regular phones. So at least on the face of it, unless you have some other intent, it would be simpler to get set up in the UK and add a virtual number close to where your parents live in the US. |
The current packet8 phone that I have through Webinc works from over here and allows my parents to be able to call me from their local number. Ugh..choices, choices
