shell, Perl & PHP programers - what editor do you use ?
looking for something better than what I have.
I'm thinking about UltraEdit or vim. I need an editor that has a regex search and replace, lets me edit files over 1gb, colorizes all parts of the code by character (vars, functions etc.) , autocomplete, encoding convertion (UTF-8 to ANSI etc.) and of course all the basics as line number on the side, spell checker etc. |
I use WeBuilder. Wouldn't even think about using anything else for what I do. :2 cents:

I like things lean and mean... Been programming 25+ years now and editplus does everything I need it to do without getting in my way with shit I don't want. But I'm not one to say there isn't something that couldn't be better so if you find something I'd love to hear about it. |
EditPlus is awesome.. however I use VIM and AlleyCode
|
EditPlus 2.
|
I use Crimson Editor :)
|
Zend Studio / VIM

I used notepad for my perl coding.

I used to use EditPlus and loved it (when I was using Windows)... Now on a Mac I use TextMate... Great editor!
|
Zend Studio is the best PHP editor I have used so far.
I use Ultraedit for everything else, also PHP if I just need to change some small things. |

What I would really like in either texmate or bbedit is the ability to put coding timestamps/checkmarks on scripts and if something goes wrong, roll back to a certain timepoint. Sort of like a self-contained cvs - that would be fantastic. I can't get into the whole cvs thing, so if it was bundled with an app, that would be great!! |
I use vi in the shell and UltraEdit in Windows. When caught on a machine without UE I always go with Crimson.

Don't forget quanta or screem. |

Vi is the best editor. Its like driving a stick-shift. Once you get used to it, there is no going back. That and anal sex...

But Find, using Python regex, wth?? |

VIM is the way to go. While its a bear to learn, once you get the basic keyboard shortcuts down, it cant be beat, and you'll wonder how you ever used any other text editor. VIM was designed from the ground up so that you NEVER have to move your hands from the homerow keys. It speeds up your editing time considerably. I would search around for some example .vimrc files (vim config files). Many people post them online, and you can grab bits and peices of all the different files that provide the behavior you want. Its amazing to watch a vim guru write code, or edit a file... its almost like an art form:P |

I use vim for everything except large php projects.
Then I use zend studio |

Using VIM's file explorer can make things easier, but I'm not good enough with it (yet;). |
