Whats it like to be on the first page of Google for a good keyword?

I've never been on the first page for any great keywords, only for long word combinations. And for that I get a trickle of clicks maybe 10-20 clicks a day.

Being on the first page for a single keyword is something that I'm working towards though. Is it like a huge flood of traffic? Can it turn your whole business around?

mikesinner 02-23-2007 01:02 PM

In my opinion it's better to get those 2 and 3 or 4 word combinations because these are the surfers that have no idea how to find what their looking for so they aren't going to have a clue about finding free porn on the net. They are much more likely to buy

It's fun, I like it. :)

Is creekful a real word?

From a mainstream perspective you are much better off with top rankings for longer search terms and the longer the better. Think of it this way...

You have a site that sells light bulbs because you are trying to sell LIGHT BULBS.

A guy goes into Google and types in "light bulbs". Your site comes up. Is he a potential customer? Maybe / maybe not... He could be looking for anything from "ideas" to dumb blond jokes.

The next guy goes to Google and types in "blue light bulbs". Is this guy your customer? Maybe / maybe not... He could be looking for any number of things.

The next guy types in "blue light bulbs online".

The next guy types in "order blue light bulbs online".

The next guy types in "order blue light bulbs online overnight shipping".

Which of these guys do you think is ready to buy light bulbs today?

would you rather be on the front page for "porn" or the front page for "jenna jameson porn"?

I would prefer the later personally

Linkster 02-23-2007 06:41 PM

I can remember when we were on the first page of Google for "sex" - way back before they started censoring their results in the English index for political correctness
Those daily hits would make any counter spin - funny thing was - it was great for traffic to trade - but sales were worse than the most targetted skimming TGP we ran
I agree that looking at 2 words and up is good - there are a few single words that provide some targetted traffic but I think Ill keep those to myself :)
Remember that how you write your description meta (the part Google usually shows in its results) can be the difference between someone clicking on your listing or someone elses

I've had people call me at 3 or 4 am from other countries on my cell. Luckily I'm almost always up at that time.

Free Money if it's a good keyword.

inthecrack 02-23-2007 11:53 PM

We've got 3 keywords that produce page 1 Google results and 1 keyword that consistantly is in the number 1 position for the last few years. I'm not about to spill the beans on all our secrets though. The number 1 position brings in about 650 visitors a day. Of course that would change for you depending on how popular your keyword is. The conversions from your keyword depend on how targeted it is.
