Advice on CraigList Sale

i have a dining table for sale on craigslist and I get an email from a potential buyer and he said he wanted to pay with check so i said ill take a money order not a check and he replies with this:

-------------------------------------------------------
Hello
The payment would be sent by UPS Courier Service and
the item will be picked
up as soon as you receive my payment,I will wait for
the payment to get
cashed. Then I will instruct my shipper to get in
contact with you for the
pick up schedule time.I will like to tell you that i
would be sending a
certified check worth of $1500 to cover the shipment
of the item bought.Assoon as the certified check
reaches you, have it cashed and remove your money
for the item and send the remaining fund to my
shipper by western union
money transfer. My shipper is also picking some of my
other items at the
same city of yours, that is why you need to transfer
the amount to him.I will
like you to remove $100 for the trouble I have caused
you during the
transaction period. Please let me know if i can trust
you on this so we can
move forward from here. Regards

--------------------------------------------------------

it sounds a little fishy to me, what ya think?

i dont see a problem if you cash the cheque first as mentioned though it does sound fishy.

total scam

Theo 02-22-2007 09:28 AM

I didn't know. Here banks dont give you any money till it gets cleared, so by the time you receive cash you know cheque was ok. Where are you located boobs?

LiveDose 02-22-2007 09:28 AM

Total scam. Anytime they tell you to wire back money or pay a shipper etc etc... Why would you need to do that? Why would they send you extra funds? It makes no sense except to someone too anxious to transact a deal. They are scamming you and then pissing in your face by tricking you into sending them money and then eating the check or money order when it comes back stolen or fake or NSF...

Lol, I've seen that form letter posted 100 times, mostly to ebayers. Its an obvious scam, just reply to him that you have located his whereabouts and contacted the local authorities.

yea because the total for the item is $200 and he wanted to send me $1500 :error

thanks guys

I would only take it if he's from nigeria.

certified checks at this point are effectively worthless.

The red flag is that he expects you to pay out the shipping from this check. That is the scammy part of all of this, the only real cash in the game is the money you will send western union to his "shipper" (read, brother, aunt, or partner in crime). They likely won't even come to pick up the furniture, but will be content to scam you out of the money you send them. A few days later, the check will bounce higher than Britney at a News Year party, and you will be screwed.

If he likes western union so much, tell him to send you the money western union. That will slow him down.

tell him money order or nothing.

MissMina 02-22-2007 11:34 AM
