Wordpress Comment Spammers...

I was gone for the weekend and came back to over a 1000 comment spams. Pain in the ass to delete because it would crash my window. Anyway, fuck you.... learn how to hide your affiliate number....

You guys are on notice!

Sosa 02-19-2007 12:19 PM

yeah comment spam is terrible. I've had to go into the actual sql database to remove them.

Klen 02-19-2007 03:42 PM

Why dont you use kismet which automaticly delete spam?

RawAlex 02-19-2007 03:44 PM

askimet gets rid of most of them... it is simple, free, and built into your wordpress software.

Formally at least, Akismet isn't free to commercial sites and if you do use the free service, your calls to their server are handled more slowly (stated clearly on their site). No problem if you only have minimal traffic, but potentially serious for bigger sites.

bulk deletion is at the bottom. thats what i do.

I also do that, just have to remember to go in and clear that shit out

StarkReality 02-19-2007 05:11 PM

I disabled comments...never seen any useful comments posted on my blogs, just shitloads of spam.

LiveDose 02-19-2007 05:14 PM

It's true there are few enough useful comments - particularly on adult blogs - to make moderating them worthwhile. But I don't see the point of denying the few there are, when a reasonably configured combination of Bad Behavior and SpamKarma will kill the spam with no intervention at all.

I just turn comments off on everything. Makes my life a lot more simple

i'm starting to think that this is probably the best way to go...

hardcoreblogger 02-19-2007 06:55 PM

spamkarma rocks, i rarely get any spams that make it thru that shield

I am going to give this a try. Are there any others?

CIVMatt 02-19-2007 08:36 PM

Why does anyone even allow WP to use comments? I tell all my installs to turn off comments

You could equally ask why anyone switches off commenting when it is confirmed in thread after thread that commonly available anti-spam plugins actually work.

baddog 02-19-2007 09:06 PM

preventing comments eliminates the possibilty of the very best linkback you can get

I recommend using SpamKarma2 and Bad Behavior, since they have complimentary strengths.

There are many options with SK and mostly the defaults are a good place to start. But make sure that when you get to the "Consider a post old after" option you enter no more than 15 days (10 is better). A great deal of automated spam is aimed at older posts, and this setting helps take care of that.

r-c-e 02-19-2007 09:25 PM

akismet or spamkarma are both good options.

minusonebit 02-20-2007 12:03 AM

Heh, I just turned comments off completely. Problem solved. Web 2.0 is over rated anyway. I am the webmaster, not the visitors.

I Like Chocolate 02-20-2007 12:17 AM

Ive been getting a lot of that comment spam too. Varies from penis enlargement to medical products.
