Comment spam on a blog?

For the last 4 or 5 days, someone is constantly spamming my comments with links to pills/advertising/shit from various IP addresses. What should I do except to disable comments?

baddog 02-17-2007 02:03 PM

even that doesn't work very well

I removed this line from index.php:

<?php comments_template(); ?>

Also deleted files wp-comments.php and wp-commentspopup.php.

This is my only idea how to solve this problem.

It is my understanding that some of these comment spammers are finding you because of pinging services.

We disable comments and have spam within seconds of the post, so it makes sense.

That really does have sence! :thumbsup

I disabled pinging services and I would try to add a new post. Thanks for sharing! :)

Assuming you are using WP add
http://unknowngenius.com/blog/wordpress/spam-karma/
It has deleted 1000's of them from my blogs

BigBen 02-17-2007 02:37 PM

On the blogs I use captcha's on, I never get any spam.

Just make it so you have to approve any comments, then they don't show up.

Interesting thread...I am just about to launch a blog and I have been wondering whether to allow comments or not :Oh crap

pornguy 02-17-2007 02:45 PM

same here. but it's really annoying to browse thru spam every time your are doing the approval. :(

TeenCat 02-17-2007 02:51 PM

disable comments and put all new comments/post to be moderated by admin, so nobody will see the posts only you, until you will not approve them. easy and spammer will go away, thats for sure

Vox 02-17-2007 03:00 PM

http://akismet.com/ plugin for WP has stopped over 12k of spam comments and pings on one of my girlfriends website.

This thread is kind of funny since Nettrust has comment spammed my own sites in the past.

We have comments disabled, and they still come in for approval . . . .granted they are never seen, but the approval requests still come in

Well, I would only do that to test the theory . . . shutting off pinging permanently is not a very good idea . . . especially if you are trying to pass as a blog SEO expert. :2 cents:

Grapesoda 02-17-2007 05:30 PM

well this guy "IeriWinner_11" keeps spamming google to my blog . . go figure . . .

HairToStay 02-17-2007 06:16 PM

I've got IeriWinner spamming every day as well, but I just hit "delete" and he's gone. Had 247 for one blog today from some fuckwit spamming the same 50 sites repeatedly, but if you click any link they are all 404 and have been for weeks.

RawAlex 02-17-2007 06:26 PM

askimet gets rid of about 99.9% of the stuff, maybe more. It is pretty effective, and the cost is nothing, so that is good.

You can also set yuor comments to refuse or delete anything with more than 2 links. That also tends to get rid of the most abusive spammers.

CaptainWolfy 02-17-2007 07:23 PM

Have you solved your problem yet? And please ICQ me nettrust if you can tnx in advance :)

Closing off comments etc., is not a good idea. Most adult blogs will not get a lot of useful comments, but it's all free labor providing extra food for other visitors and the SE's.

Akismet has a good reputation, but commercial sites are supposed to pay for the service. I'm not aware of anyone being denied access for failing to pay if they should, but your site makes a call to their server each time someone attempts to post a comment and free users are handled more slowly than those who do pay.

I have comments open and I do not moderate. Still it's unusual if even one spam a month makes it onto my sites. I have pinging and trackbacks disabled on adult sites (since our "community" only rarely makes legitimate use of these features). Otherwise I use a combination of Bad Behavior and Spam Karma, since they cover different spam characteristics.

It is particularly important to have Spam Karma recognize posts older than 10-15 days as "old", since the vast majority of automated spam hits older posts.

I set it to more than 1 or 0.

I have this problem too. Some idiot are spamming my comments with pills, viagra, toys, other blogs, casinos etc etc etc
This sucks! :(

Roald 02-18-2007 06:52 AM

thnk god our tech guy took care of the spam comments. We had to approve comments too but even that was shitty as you had to browse through all spam messages. Now with some new plugin and some custom code no spam is coming through anymore at all.

Don;'t ask me how though as I have no idea how he did it ;)))
