Anyone using Rackshack 10mbps?

We are thinking about grabbing one of these. The price is certainly right and 10mbps will meet our demands for some time.

Anyone got anything good to say about them?

payrollpete 08-04-2002 02:30 PM

rackshack is pretty good we have a box there

get ahold of jason @ cologroup.com for the best deal on 10mbps, and dedicated machine... he can slice you some wicked deals

Hind 08-04-2002 02:38 PM

Hey Shoplifter... check my sig. They dont use cogent bandwidth and they will save you a lot of headaches.

Shoplifter 08-04-2002 02:56 PM

Hind, what is the setup fee at gfx? If it is minimal I may go that way.

The thing about Rackshack (and that other thread) is that if it doesn't work I'll just charge it back. I'm rather more worried about routing issues via Cogent.

Hind 08-04-2002 03:01 PM

The setup fee depends on the server you want. But they have good prices and you can pay for it in a few monthly payments.

Why don't you contact them? (and tell HIND referred you cause i want my $100 discount!)

Rackshack offers it for $349/mo plus $249/installation

There was a thread a while ago about Rackshack, you guys should read it if you haven't already. It's by Choker, and he's not a guy who's given to make up stories........

Just sayin', I always like to check out everything about a company before putting any part of my business in their hands.

I dont think youll get much use out of Linux install box with 512 ram , especially running a control panel, wich are famous for being dogs with adult hosting. And remember you are on your own with racksack for EVERYTHING.

Talked to hs yesterday, them servers are brand new. Brand new HD's, brand new everything. I would hop on it. Just make sure you know how to admin a server.

Rackshack sucks. Thats about all that has to be said. Like CD Smith said, Choaker is a good guy, and his opinion is correct. But there has been many others that had problems with them also. I would stay away from them.:2 cents:

i've got a 10mbit with RS. been good so far. can't complain.. i even expected a little less speed since it's cogent, RS, AND it's so damn cheap.. but nope.. it's been nice! i've been pushing 2-3 mbit sustained through, with peak up to 10mbit here and there, not too shabby at all.

mrbling 08-04-2002 10:54 PM

theres a reason why rackshack has over 8000 servers/clients

and it ain't because their servers suck.

Ya? Well, anyone reading through that thread I posted above will see more than a few established guys stating some pretty negative experiences with this company. That always gives me cause for concern when choosing a host, don't know about you. Guess it all goes to each person's own experiences, but it looks like there are some big red flags for this company.

It would appear (from what I've read anyway) that they are sorely lacking in the area of tech support, which is a big negative for a lot of webmasters. There are other hosts that do offer a high level of support that also have hi-end fast servers. Really, is the choice unclear?

Well, they are very cheap. And i'm guessing one of the main reasons for that is the lack of tech support. I wouldn't recommend anyone getting a rackshack server unless they had the technical know-how on how to fully admin a server, or knew someone that did who was willing to help.

But if they do know, or know someobdy else with technical knowledge, why not?

The reason is because they are cheap. The do suck though. They are the absolute worst host I have ever been with. I do not recommend them to anybody unless that is the only thing you can afford.

Technical backround will not apply when you get faulty equipment or hardrives with bad sectors that cause the server to eventually crash. Rackshack or Shitshack's servers blow. My server crashes regularly... probably 5-6 times a month, sincet he first day I got it. Rackshack does nothing to help me and if you go read the link above that CD gave you, you will find many others who have had horrible problems. I know one guy whose server was even more fucked than mine. Use Shitshack is a risk, but many take it because of the low prices.

mike503 08-05-2002 08:23 AM

people on GFY either hate them or have no problems with them.

at this point it is just everyone's personal experience and personal preference. when it boils down to it, RS is great for non-critical sites when you know what you're doing technically. if you need critical uptime and data integrity pay for it somewhere else (although i have my RS box doing incremental offsite backups to my home network every six hours, just in case of hardware failure or any other unforseen issues.)

i'd say they're a great place to grow and move on to a little more specialized/premium hosting later on. even if i move i'll probably keep the 10mbit box though (unless i get my own cogent 100mbit shit..) because bandwidth that cheap is nice to have, and i'm not paying premium bandwidth prices for wankers to eat it for $.50-$1 per gig.

That sort of hits the nail on the head...You don't want to be using a metered or capped connection for "wanker quality" bandwidth applications.
