Buying a new digital camera

Hi all. I am looking to buy a new digital camera and I was wondering what you think is the best one to get. I currently have a Nikon and looking to upgrade. I am not concerned about the price.

DateDoc 02-14-2007 12:37 AM

i've been looking too.

tony286 02-14-2007 12:54 AM

What do you have currently as in model number and do you want a dslr or a all in one?

Zorgman 02-14-2007 01:03 AM

What Nikon do you have?

I have a Nikon D50 and its great but I could always update it. Maybe a D200.

ffmihai 02-14-2007 01:10 AM

buy a sony

Sebastian Sands 02-14-2007 01:16 AM

not concerned about the price.. I would go with a Canon 5D.. I just got mine and I am LOVING it.

Try a reputable store, such as this one for digital cameras :)

perfectodollars-gabrio 02-14-2007 10:33 AM

i suggest checking out a site like www.dpreview.com - they are #1 and have great reviews.. other than that... i'd go for a Nikon D2X or a D80 is cool too ;-)

dbs101 02-14-2007 10:35 AM

i use a canon 350d its the shit cost me £700 brand new and i got various lenses and flashguns,

I think the 1DsII would be a better choice; it's a nice, cheap pocket camera.

BTW, why do people always seem to recommend cameras they "just got" ? :food-smil

I've always quoted that 1ds MKII as my favorite camera - but its total overkill for web production. Good if you're shootin' for magazines or billboards.

We just got a Nikon d80 over Christmas - upgraded from our Olympus e10. Still in the testing phase in the studio as we speak.

JaneB 02-14-2007 01:52 PM

Thanks for the suggestions, I will check them out. Since I have two websites I need a very good camera. I have seen some camera's that look great, but the picture quality is poor. I was looking at the Nikon D2X.

One tip - whatever cam you choose, invest a fair bit of time testing it out fully...figure out what its capabilities and limitations are under various conditions and settings. Experiment the hell out of it before judging whether its the camera you want/need. Most decent camera shops (the higher end ones, not Kmart...so to speak) will give you a min. 30-day trial period to get acquainted with the rig, with an option to upgrade if you're not satisfied with results.

Kimo 02-14-2007 04:02 PM

holla at sony

Don't forget about the lighting :)

CosmicTang 02-14-2007 05:02 PM

I got the Olympus SW720

waterproof to 10 feet, shock proof from 5 feet.

but i spend a lot of time on sailboats, so it made a lot of sense for me.

If ya' need a camera waterproof to 10 feet, sounds like you spend more time overboard. :1orglaugh

Is that 'waterproof'...or 'water resistant'?

With dslr's its more the person doing the shooting and the quality of light then the camera.Timothy Greenfield-Sanders for his last book used a olympus e volt 330, which is the bottom of their dslr line.

The lens will all pale compared to the e10 sadly, I have 1200 dollars lens and they are a weak second to the glass on the e10

czarina 02-14-2007 05:40 PM

Canon 20D or 30D. Unbeatable!

TSGlider 02-14-2007 06:00 PM

CNET.com has some great reviews.

Because they like to think they have the best cam... :winkwink:

CrazyAussieBastard 02-14-2007 06:03 PM

If your not concerned about price why don't you go to a shop and ask for help?....I hate everyone!

Dood 02-14-2007 06:06 PM

Yeah the canon 30d is a great value, the 5d is really good for magazines and stuff but the 30d is an excellent camera for online and home prints. I love mine.

BUT...if you don't plan on learning how to fully use a dslr then you're better off with a compact 5mp pocket cam.

Check jr.com, they usually have really good prices and free shipping on some stuff.

Never buy anything over $50 at places like bestbuy or circuitcity, they add anywhere from 10% to 75% to the price.

Petter Hegre uses medium format digital and publishes 6000px images on his site. Just in case you wanted to examine a cluster of pores... :helpme

rowan 02-15-2007 12:18 AM

At a 3:2 ratio a 6000px image would be 24 megapixels

Mr. E 02-15-2007 12:37 AM

If you are not concerned with price, get a Canon 1Ds :thumbsup

Because the highest price camera in the first
shop she go to might not be (best) for her
needs.

We bought Nikon D200 not long ago. It is great! But probably you wouldn't like to have about 4 kg in your hand all the time.

4kg??!? Maybe if you have a telescope attached to it. :1orglaugh

pornbilly 02-15-2007 10:04 AM

I have the new SONY DSC-N1... amazing... big view screen! And fast shots...

Check it out on dpreview.com :thumbsup

pornguy 02-15-2007 10:11 AM

For the most part a 5D is overkill for most people. I have the 20D, and it is overkill in most situations. But it is nice.
A big bulky for family use.

I have the D2X and can highly recommend it, however I have been told that unless you are a fairly experienced photographer, it can be a bit hard to use (as the options are so numerous) and get strong photos..it is also quite heavy.
I never use it on auto...always custom settinge etc.
If you are just going to use it for web, you may consider something lessor..like the D80 or the D200 is supposed to be an excellent choice.
