I just did the dumbest shit to my car...

I have been parking in the same covered spot at my apartment complex for about a year, but for some reason today I fucking scraped up against one of the poles. It didn't dent the car at all, just left some of the paint from the pole on top of my car's paint. Do you guys know of any product that will get that paint off? Or do I need to have it done professionally? How much does something like that usually cost?

chri$tian 02-13-2007 07:16 PM

I guess that's not too bad. I just went out there with a wet towel and tried scrubbing the paint off... but that shit is on there good lol.

stickyfingerz 02-13-2007 07:22 PM

Well its going to take the bumper cover and fender being painted. They can do a pretty good blend with where you did it. So roughly 250.00 to 400.00 should cover it. Bout 2 days in the shop with dry times.

Should I take it straight to chevy, or look around for a good local shop?

Pipecrew 02-13-2007 07:25 PM

i did the same thing, put a bunch of yellow paint on my car, cost me 400 to mend the shit and repaint it. Sucks balls, pulled in and out of that same spot forever, just wasnt paying enough attention.

Dealer will charge twice as much, take it to some body shop and offer cash and tell them not to report it, most wont report it anyways, shit can depreciate your car a lot the day you try to sell it and its reported via carfax "in an accident"

If you are going to pay it yourself ask around about good local shops. Dealership will be alot more normally. There is no part replacement so since its just paint work just find a good shop. I ran a bodyshop at a dealership for a few years. I cant hardly breath in paint fumes anymore though drives me nuts.

Try Starbrite car wax if you can find it. It will take a few rub outs to work and some elbow grease.

Other than that take a knapped clothe towel and try to rub it out with baby oil or 3in1 oil. 3in1 is probably the best.

joefriday 02-13-2007 07:34 PM

You may be able to buff it out.

interracialtoons 02-13-2007 07:35 PM

PS: when finished wash away the oil with soap and water or it will eat thru the cheap plastic shit cars are made of these days.

yeah think you could buff out at least 60% of it.

Matt 26z 02-13-2007 07:56 PM

Put some bumper stickers over that and call it a day.

Benasty 02-13-2007 08:22 PM

My brother is a professional mobile paint guy...

You don't need to repaint your bumper. Just go down to home depot or a hardware store and get some lacquer thinner. Take a soft cloth.. dab some lacquer thinner on it and gently rub off the pole paint from your bumper. Once the pant is gone just take some wax and buff the spot you just cleaned up.

Guarenteed to work :)

Guaranteed to work man... My brother and myself have done this a million times. People are amazed when my brother does it... the damage just looks worse then it is. Only takes 1 minute to do.

mattz 02-13-2007 08:55 PM

buff it out yourself and get the same color paint...would be the cheapest

if you take it in they will charge anywhere from 150-500

I had a scrap about 3-4 times the size of that on my truck and it was 800

That actually sounds like a good idea, if not try mine :) but for sure don't take it in, they will just rape you

And if for some reason you took off the original paint you're no worse off than before, right?

It wouldn't cost anymore then $150 to spray that bumper.

I could spot a paint job from a mile away...no matter who does it. So don't let anyone charge you more then $150 thinking it's going to be perfect. That should be plenty for them to mix the paint, spray and blend.

Maco charges that much for a whole fucking car. Trust me $150 is plenty.

Big_Red 02-13-2007 09:21 PM

It won't take off the original paint unless you actually scrub hard... i mean scrub hard in the same spot over and over. I've done it a million times... so had my brother, never had the original paint come off. As soon as the lacquer thinner hits the pole paint it will come off... just wipe it off.

As for rubbing compound idea.... It won't work. You'll be scrubbing all day and the poll paint won't come off. Not to mention you'll swirl up your car paint if you keep rubbing and rubbing it on your car b/c of the grit in it. You'd need to high speed buff it to get the swirls out.

emthree 02-13-2007 11:44 PM

Use rubbing compound and your good hand.
Takes some muscle and time but most of that will come off.

Sorry but wow.... Speaking as someone trained to do estimates ... "I dont think so Tim"

I guarantee you if I do a repair job you would not be able to tell what I did. I did showcars that at least 5 or 6 are still on the showcar circuit. My dad and I have a 56 Studebaker Golden Hawk sitting in a museum up in New York right now.

Once someone says "I could spot a paint job from a mile away...no matter who does it." They just lost credibility. Ive had the most anal customers in the world examine work I did, or the shops I rans work and couldnt find anything wrong.

And if the paint is not scratched, then alot will buff out, but to me the front leading edge of the fender is surely chipped and scratched through to the metal. Its hard to tell from a photo taken at night though.

stickyfingerz 02-14-2007 01:03 AM

Just to break it down.

Labor hours 3.5 @ 55.00 per hour 192.50
Paint and materials 145.00
No parts needing replaced. 0.00
Hazard waste disposal fee 15.00
Subtotal 352.50
Tax 28.20
Total 380.70

If you go get an estimate this is likely what you will see or close to it.

If you got lucky enough that the paint only got rubbed onto the clear coat and didnt break through you can go have it buffed out. High speed buffer plus compound will work.

Fap 02-14-2007 01:06 AM

H2SO4 works well

BitAudioVideo 02-14-2007 02:37 AM

scratches add character!

Antonio 02-14-2007 04:04 AM

go to your nearest petrol station and tehy sure can sell you something - it's not a big deal at all (as long as it's not dented, as you said)

Vitasoy 02-14-2007 04:54 AM

If the paint is scratched then you'll need to get it painted at a repair shop 200-400 depending where. If it's not try rubbing compound with some good ol' elbow grease

x-zoom 02-14-2007 06:12 AM

now that sucks! good luck with it

Ay man that shit worked like a fucking charm! :thumbsup :thumbsup I don't know why I waited 2 weeks to try it, but I'm glad I did. The paint came right off like it was nothing. You can barely see a tiny scratch and that's about it, the white paint is totally gone. Thanks man!

chaze 03-02-2007 04:05 PM

Damn that sucks, but it could of been allot worse. I did one to my Z driving home tired.
