Do you run an IRC Channel?

Just wondering, how many of you run an IRC channel, and which is the best network as far as you are concerned.

Do you find it helps you get additional traffic and/or users?

Thank you in advance.

i do. i think undernet provides the most surfer traffic, but efnet is best for actually talking to people. :2 cents: i will say that i mostly leave them open because i'm already networking in a private # that's only a few close colleagues that exchange new pertinent info re: business.

I used to be big into IRC way back in the day. Haven't checked it out in the past 3-4 years though.

Not in years... people still use IRC?

We used to years ago on Dalnet (until the last big ddos attack).

Lost interest....

I use to make scripts for Mirc 1998/99. Decided to download Mirc today and see what I remember. Been so long!

Nice, thank you :)

I use to be on IRC from 96 to 2003. Dalnet/Efnet/Relicnet.

Yes I ran some channel, 1000 +

But it was just too much hassle keeping your botnet up when it was getting ddosed all the time.

Efnet blew cuz of DDOS attacks, Dalnet just blew in general.

Im a IRCop on 2 big networks, i would say that efnet or dalnet are the best ones...

I use to run eggdrop and mirc protection bots for some pretty large channels way back in the day.

I run my channel on fdfnet.net. I have a java chat client on my site so people who have never heard of IRC can connect :) But I attract a pretty tech-savvy audience, so most people come in with IRC clients. It usually has 12-20 people in it and it's not really focused on me, but more on the community as we've grown to know each other over the years. It's a huge part of what holds the community together. But it still gets people who come in with the "show ur titz plz" comments :P

It's definitely the best place for me to run a chat room because of my audience, but I'd think that a less techie crowd would be better with a Flash chat or something.

efnet, dalnet, and undernet has gotten quite large recently. :2 cents:

I do but its on a private server

Hotrocket 02-13-2007 06:23 PM

sorry missed the 2nd part of your question..yes I get a signifigant amount of traffic this way..and have used this method of traffic generation for about 6 years. The channel is webcam related and I run a network of sites that focus on the webcam niche that I draw that traffic thru..works very well for me. :)

Thanks for the responses. We set a couple up, will see if the name alone is enough to draw people in until I learn to be adept at this.
