Best Program and Format for ripping DVD content is...?

Just got a huge pile of DVD content from the fine folks at WWC, now I'm faced with ripping it all from DVD, new for me, usually have other people do it.

So what's the best program to rip it and save it as the highest best res videos from the DVD's to keep as masters from which I will optimize from? :helpme

I use http://www.magicdvdripper.com/ to rip to AVI, then I use cleaner to convert to all the formats

why rip to AVI? I popped it in when Vegas 7 was open and selected "Import cam DVD" and it sucked the DVD in as MPEG-2, is the AVI better quality?

I just prefer to work with the raw format, avi is raw, mpeg-2 is compressed....so, when you compress to mpeg-2, then convert to other formst you are compressing again, so you lose a little quality compressing twice

magicdvdripper lets you rip straight to avi or wmv from the DVD itself, why not start there?

So does mpegmediator, but I just find it is much easier to just rip the multiple DVDs first, then do them all at the same time, like 20 at a time if your hardware can take it...
Also I prefer making extra copies of the DVDs for archiving.

Ahhh, so you just toss in 20 dvds in a row, rip the Vob's than batch em into AVI's all at once huh? makes sense.

so when you batch em into AVI's what codec do you use?

anyone have a formula for guessing the amount of disc space I will need for say 300 hours of video, to rip it to AVI, then convert to WMV's for member sections?
