Sponsors providing RSS feeds...INSIDE PLEASE NOW!

Using the title of the post in the feed as the link does not count

meaning, if you have an rss feed with a full blog post, but the only thing linking to the site is the title of the blog post, then your feed is ALL BUT WORTHLESS

when most rss parsers import the feed into wordpress or whatever, it will take the title of the post and make it the permalink, like this
http://www.cockhuggers.com/index.php...ensed-to-blow/

see how the title of the blog post is ALSO part of the url? THAT is a permalink, and that is what your post title gets turned into with wordpress

Azlord 02-08-2007 03:48 PM

Permalinks are yummy. That's forsure. I see tons of big blogs that don't take advantage of them.

Martin 02-08-2007 05:12 PM

Bump for ya.

StuartD 02-08-2007 05:16 PM

My favorite are the sponsors who have links such as "/pictures/index.php?idx=32423"

Which translates to diddly squat when it's displayed on my domain.

kaktusan 02-08-2007 05:19 PM

you might try looking for such at my http://www.sponsorhostedfeeds.com
site, you can quickly preview few of the feeds for each sponsor, exactly as blogs read the feeds, so you might find some suitable to your needs...

Big_Red 02-08-2007 05:22 PM

bump bump. hey Jace have you checked out www.sponsorhostedfeeds.com? thats the first time i have seen it posted, right above my post.

Camspot Matt 02-08-2007 05:23 PM

Jace, you didnt answer my question above? :upsidedow

edit: sorry i am a bit toasted tonight. i shouldnt have spammed his board twice. errrrrrrrrr

StarkReality 02-08-2007 06:10 PM

Thanks, Jace, that's something I recognized several times as well.

I can't really understand why some sponsors offer rss feeds declared as "ready to import in your blog" if they are broken or useless. Yes, feeds are hyped and are totally overrated, but if you offer them, make them usable, please.

Creating a proper feed is no rocket science, rewriting it to make it work properly is not difficult as well, but I doubt many affiliates do it or know how to do it.

You don't need a programmer, running your own server is much more complicated than creating a proper feed, there a loads of free tutorials sites that teach you how to do it in a matter of hours.

Big_Red 02-08-2007 07:16 PM

sponsors please fix your RSS feeds! :thumbsup

kaktusan 02-08-2007 08:18 PM

is it ok to have tons of link to outside in your blog posts? it won't affect your SE? thinking of this as well.. i think if im a surfer i would definately click on the pics first before the text links.. much easier.

Martin 02-08-2007 08:52 PM

Since this thread is about getting things right, and you asked: http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=ht....com%2Fblog%2F

The next time you have a blog designed, get it done table-free. It makes no sense to start with a platform which offers valid CSS and load it up with poor code.

Tableless is in the next revision actually. Thanks so much for the input though. I appreciate it.

Jace, that is for the xhtml validation of the main index page, NOT the Rss validation.

The Rss validates fine.

Rss Validation

I second this one. As it is I'm going to have to write a pre-parser and run it through it.

SinisterStudios 02-08-2007 11:34 PM

Jace is right this stuff is not rocket science, it just takes a bit of work and some good planning to put out feeds that are worth using and that are in the proper format. It just seems that most of the sponsors are just putting out feeds to say they have RSS, instead of understanding how RSS works and how people want to use the feeds.

Jace i think its time to start doing some tutorials on the proper use of rss feeds and how to make them work for you. I know were willing to try and teach people the true power of RSS.

That being said, checkout our feeds, RSS done the proper way since day 1, and they are even Jace approved

JD 02-09-2007 04:50 PM

bump for Jacedizzle

anne 02-09-2007 10:24 PM

We just released our RSS feed here it is in blog format www.homecamnetwork.com

I would love any suggestions on how to make it better. I have ran it through the feed validator and it came back good. What do you think?

What is that about?
