Porting wireless phone numbers

Has anyone moved an existing cell phone or landline number to a new service provider? Is it pretty smooth or should I expect headaches with the process?:Oh crap

I did it about a year ago, switching from Sprint to Cingular. Was completely smooth and easy. When I ordered the phone I gave them my existing number and requested for it to be ported, when my phone arrived I called a toll free number and then hung up (using my old phone) and then switched off my old phone and my new phone on and it worked.

I ported from Verizon to Cingular a couple of months ago. No problems. I gave Cingular the number and they did everything else.

Just make sure you don't cancel your service with your old carrier before the number ports to the new one. If you cancel your contract or the phone is turned off for any reason, the number won't port.

Not in the US. In the UK landline and non-geos can be a nightmare.
