So what are newbs doing for money these days?

I was having a discussion with someone about this the other night and it dawned on me that if someone asked me how they could get started in this business I would have no idea what to tell them.

Back when I started (2000) you submitted free sites to green guy and tommys, and if you could afford the bandwidth you submitted to TGP's.
Traffic was free and plentiful but bandwidth and content were very expensive.

Nowadays it seems you can get your content and hosting for free, or next to nothing if you pay for it, but there's no free traffic anymore.

If you were starting in this business today what would you do to get your foot in the door and build up from there?

I'd start some sort of directory. Maybe one adult; one non-adult.

I'd even consider getting a job working for someone I respect and could learn from.

Come with money, make MORE FAST money! There is no money to be made without investing money.

A lot harder these days for sure. Submitting just isn't going to make as much unless you have money for paid listings. Submit passes for most people just won't cut it.

There is still good money in seo though if you know what you are doing :)

my tips - think of something your good at, exploit that. if you can code, dont just code for yourself, but code for others - for free if you have too, just so you can learn.

once you have some sites, imo traffic is better than content - if 1000000 people see 1 shitty site, there is a better chance of one of them buying than 1000 ppl seeing 1 good site imo.

Working the truck stops on the interstate can be quite lucrative.

I kind of agree with KingRedOnion, though. Find something you like and get good at it. You can build traffic when you find something you like and just keep doing it.

A newbie needs money to invest and a day job to get started now.
