Mike Semen 02-07-2007 09:44 AM

Yup this has been all over the news for the last day or so here... Its war I guess, mistakes happen. ..

Not sure why the US took so long to release the tapes tho.

KingRedOnion 02-07-2007 10:54 AM

think the us didnt want the tapes to come out - the sun managed to get hold of them.

The first claims of a reason to avoid disclosing the tape content was it was classifed "secret" by the US govt. There is nothing "secret" about the tape - it was just embarassing - another screwup.

It then took along three years to have the tape released and came to a head last week when a coroner adjourned a hearing until it was presented - meantime pressure at a higher level eventually resulted in the content being available.

Who knows where this will lead - the coroner's findings are next, then *possible* further action against the pilot (tho he's been cleared by a US hearing) and the those in the Command Center. Both fucked up big time - the pilot acknowledged but ignored the orange panels on vehicles (NATO friendly vehicle sign) and the Command Center confirmed to the pilot that there were no friendly vehicles in the area.

Just keep struggling little boy and take your stupid defensive chip off your shoulder - idiot.

Fetish Gimp 02-07-2007 11:48 AM

It's called "friendly fire" only when you're not on the receiving end of it.

MrChips 02-07-2007 11:53 AM

In the UK we already know the americans cant shoot right.

We say this.

"When the germans fire - the English duck. When the English fire - the Germans duck - when a yank fires - everyone ducks (including the yanks)".

that sucks that he has to live with that. I can't see how he would be blamed after asking so many times if there was any friendly in the area but it still has to fuck with his head. I feel bad for everyone involved .. including the guy on the ground

I said this on another board but I think the release of the video has actually helped the public perception of the American pilots because it was heard how upset they were and why they mistook the orange. Now I think people just are pissed that it took so long for a tape that was said not to exist to be allowed to be shown to a military coroner on the same side of the war. It feels more about the US military/gov't higher levels not respecting the loss of a British soldier.

Lance69 02-07-2007 02:28 PM

Situation sucks like crazy for all involved. It isn't only a US problem, it happens everywhere at some point or another. If blame is laid I hope it doesn't only go to the pilots, at least they tried to confirm friendly or not. :Oh crap
Which is more than the National guard pilots screaming "self defence" from small arms fire, after being told to hold off and climb and not to fire.

Doubt anything will come of it - unless the family decided to take some kind of action. And agree - there is no point in shooting the messenger when others supported his action.

borked 02-07-2007 02:49 PM

Cheers guys!

borked 02-07-2007 03:07 PM

It's sad - it just shows how much intel is important. They did keep repeating if it was the convoy with with orange roofs, and some guy joked about it. If the pilots had called no-go, then they would have been in shit if it was a bad call.

They are in stressful positions and a long way from the targets. Yet have the ability to destroy so much.

It's a difficult tape to watch - but thanks for posting the links.

sad to see this :(
