Are HDMI cables really necessary?

Or is this another plot by DVD makers to chump a little extra change off LCD/Big screen TV buyers? :321GFY :321GFY

leming 02-07-2007 01:05 AM

HDMI really works for you. Don't worry about :)

tony286 02-07-2007 01:15 AM

they work but very expensive

mx8829 02-07-2007 01:26 AM

They do make a big difference. I bought a SONY 46" LCD and an HD Home Theater DVD system a week ago, when I bought it I didn't realize how expensive the cables and stuff was going to be.

I not only have to upgrade my cable box to a HD digital cable box but also spent another $400 on just HDMI and Fiberoptic cables. If you are using an LCD screen you will see pixaltion on non digital channels if you use S video or component, but using HDMI will fix that problem. Aleast it did for me.

You can buy the monster HDMI cables for abut $49.99 , they well fine.

MassiveDollars - DonPaul 02-07-2007 01:37 AM

HDMI cables is a MUST, especially if you are using larger screens!

96ukssob 02-07-2007 02:17 AM

yes, they do make a difference. you can get cheap crappy ones but you pay for what you get.

However, if you have a HD tv, a must have is a Monster Power Center, they start about $300 but made a HUGE differnece in the picture and sound

That's what I have right now... monster HDMI 1081i cables... Is it just me or is there a transmission issue? The rez goes from sharp to pixelated edges. I guess I have to return the cables and get a replacement.

Be careful before buying a DVI <-> HDMI cable if you want wo connect a PC (Media Center or something) to a display that doesn't has a standard 720 or 1080 resolution. The point is, that my plasma TV has a resolution of 1366x768 and this resolution is not supportet on the HDMI/DVI input! The only solution for me was to connect the PC with a normal VGA cable. The picture looks very good after the automatic calibration of the TV with the inputted VGA signal.
Summary: If all devices support native HD resolutions, then buy a HDMI cable. But if you want to use non standard resolutions, then in most cases the digital connection doesn't work.

I'm glad they came with the xbox360! HD quality rocks

It's a piece of wire transmitting voltage on, voltage off. How can paying $300 for a "high end" cable make a huge difference?

Where exactly are you getting that information from? I had my satellite guy and multiple TV sales people all laughing at the idiots who go out and buy expensive cables. Every single one of them told me the companies selling these "top of the line" cables are making a fortune because they convince consumers there is a difference, when in fact, there is not. I was told the cheapest one I could find would be just the same as the most expensive one.

I ordered the HD satellite and DVR receiver package from Direct TV after I bought my LCD and there was an HDMI cable included inside the box with the DVR, so luckily I didn't have to buy one at all.

edit: When the fuck did Reynold change from a dutch, ESL, broken English, can't understand most of the shit he writes, sig whore, to starting threads about HDMI 1081i cable transmission issues and pixelated edges?????????

:uhoh :question

Exactly, they either transmit the signal or they don't. There's no difference between a $6 dollar HDMI cable found here, or a $300 Monster Cable. Monster Cables are the biggest rip off and total scam. If you think there's a difference, buy them both and have someone mix them up so you don't know which one is which and connect them. You will never see the difference.

Yep.... I've heard the same thing.... fortunately I got my HDMI free with my new Samsung DVD player :)

The quality of the cable only makes a difference with analogue cables.

Dollarmansteve 02-07-2007 08:38 AM

HDMI cables are necessary if you want 1080p - do not buy name brand cables, go to www.monoprice.com and buy them there for $10 a pop.

HammerALL 02-07-2007 08:51 AM

they are worth it and I got a pair off ebay for $11 - just dont' buy from bestbuy - they will rape you.

Those are component cables, not HDMI.

mx8829 02-07-2007 11:45 PM

well as I said about just by changing the cables from component to HDMI made all the difference for me. Yea cheap ass comcast only gave me crappy component cable and not HDMI.

I agree DirectTv is getting far better in terms of service than fucking comcast. Unfortunately there is a month waiting list for directTV in my area.

All in all when it comes to HD LCD tv's cables do play a big role. I didn't belive others until I bought my TV. LOL

You could have spent $15 instead of $400 and it would have made the same difference :1orglaugh
Cable quality really only matter with analog.

The XBox 360 HD-DVD player does not support HDMI sorry.

"Additionally, movie studios can program discs to display at lower resolution when displayed via component-video outputs, which could render the Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive almost useless for many consumers"

Component video and HDMI are not the same thing.

emthree 02-08-2007 12:42 AM

I made the switch from VGA to DVI and it made a big difference.
I'm not too sure about component to HDMI. Anyone have a comparison?

my friend used to work at an electornics/car stereo store and told me basically what you said is true, with some exceptions. sure, most of the "name brand" cables you buy are just as good as teh generic ones off ebay. however, with some like monster, they have the fibers spun more tightly and use a grounding cable down teh center to prevent some distortion.

i have noticed a difference myself between a generic hdmi cable and the monster hdmi cable.

not $300 for the cable. the cable i got was "high end" for $99 bucks.

what i was referring to is this

http://www.monstercable.com/power/lineRefPower.asp

2 other people besides myself noticed a difference when they bought one as well. ive heard they really help extending the life of plasmas as well

Haterade? That's not a filipino term. Where have you been outsourced to now?

sltr 02-08-2007 08:23 AM

the great thing about hdmi cables is i can plug all my sources, xbox, cable box, dvd player, etc. into my av receiver then just have 1 cable- the hdmi cable to plug into my television from the receiver!

less clutter!

MattO 02-08-2007 08:23 AM

I used to work retail electronics and Monster products are the biggest scam going. People at stores push them because the markup is insane, a cable that costs the store around 3 bucks they'll sell for 100.

Digital signals dont suffer from teh distortion, only data loss :2 cents:

Wiggles 02-08-2007 08:38 AM

i work for a cable company, they are not required, still get hd picture with monster cables, but hdmi is definately a better picture.

Fabulous. I had no idea extra leisure time caused a sudden improvement in spelling, grammar, and punctuation. I will email lensman and suggest he send the entire board on a two week cruise.

The 360 upscales regular DVDs and plays HD-DVDs (with add-on drive) up to 1080P if you use the VGA cable. They can't stop people from using that. I haven't seen an HDTV made in the last 3 years that didn't have a VGA input.

The only thing I figured out is you have the reading comprehension skills of a mound of dirt.

He would have noticed the same difference on cheap HDMI and toslink cables as he did with the $400 dollars ones he said he bought.

Snake Doctor 02-08-2007 11:09 AM

I bought a DVD upconverter and it wouldn't work without the hdmi cable.
It would play dvd's in 480i but that's it.

Plugged in the $100 HDMI cable and now it plays all of my old dvd's in 1080i...amazing difference in picture.

Tom_PM 02-08-2007 11:20 AM

I spent about 10 bucks each for my HDMI cables and they're fine. With a digital signal, the cable works or it doesnt. Yes some giant companies have excellent quality control and such, but in the end it'll work or it wont.

I have an HD DVD player, HD DVR for cable, and 1080i plasma. The HD DVD player *requires* the HDMI cable to upconvert normal DVD's. So obviously you need it depending on your disc setup, or not.

Component signals from my DVR box to my TV looks better than the HDMI picture.

Component signals from my HDDVD to my tv looks better than HDMI.

So for me, the only time I use HDMI is when I'm watching a standard DVD in the HD player (since it's required). Otherwise it falls back to 480.

So IMHO, unless you have a unit that REQUIRES HDMI, stick with component cables. And when you do buy an HDMI cable, shop completely on who has the lowest price.

Tom_PM 02-08-2007 01:17 PM

No, digital signals work or dont work. It's not like an analog component cable where the denser shielding and most pure copper makes a big difference. You have 100%, or you have 0%.
