Blu Ray vs. HD Dvd Players

Anyone got one? My gf is asking me what i want for our 5 year anniversery next week (dating).

I know blu ray is best, but its about a grand. M$ makes a HD DVD player for the xbox360 for $200. My tv supports 720p/1080i (plasma 42")

I know some movies are only on HD and some on BR, but regardless, anyone have a 1:1 comparision? Ive read up on sites and seems to be conflicting comments on each.

Fuck..... I hate it when there's format wars like this. Gotta wait a few years before getting a machine or else end up feeling chumped like a dude who bought a ton of 8 track tapes in the 70s.

yeah, that is definetly true. i was thinking about the one for HD for xbox because its only $200 bucks.

I tried one of those upscale converter dvd players, but could not get it to work at all... think i had a bunk unit

Divx vs. DVD ....

I would go with the hd dvd. Surprised about the upscale converter, worked on mine great.

HD is going to win... Everything is being advertised as HD nowadays, everyone is going to be commercially brainwashed to go the HD route...

We have HD radio now, HD TV channels, HD Televisions, cameras... blah blah blah.

(P.S. Im high as hell right now so i prolly dont make any sense)

I think cyber got a point, though BR seems promising HD is being promoted to widely its going to become the norm. Plus HD is alot cheaper than BR right now and lots of devices support it

BR has won already. Just look at the list of upcoming movies.

my friend has one and it does not play all the movies. that is because the software in the blu ray player has to be updated very often, however that for the ps3, it first has to be put thru sonys ps3 firmware, qa'd, then sent out to the systems. when you get a blu ray player, you have to hook it up to the net to downlaod new firmware upgrades to play movies (from what i am told)

i might get the hddvd only for the price and wait for the blu ray to drop down a bit. worst case, mr. lazer disc player will have a new friend in the storage room :winkwink:

i bought some one that i read was supposed to be the best one, but the HDMI output would not work for shit, which is how you get the highest resolution. i may try another one this weekend to see

Neither format has won, and either way, they will be short lived for Digital Distribution.

Blu-Ray is not better either. It's only "better" if you look at how much data fits on the disc.

Tryme 02-07-2007 02:43 AM

the hd-dvd movies have better encoding on them right now, so they are the better choice

Dirty Dane 02-07-2007 04:26 AM

In the case of HD vs BR , 95% of the quality depends on your TV and not the player. There are also various quality on the movies themself.

Kimo 02-07-2007 04:54 AM

i vote hd
