Computer wont boot up
Last time i used my pc (win xp) it was on stand by mode and now it wont boot up. i have tried unplugging and rebooting it and all i get is the fans running with a black screen and i dont hear the hard-drive spin like it usually does.Keyboard and mouse also dont light up. :helpme
Anyone suggest anything ? |
get a new hd.
|
could be the cable from the hdd came loose. happened to me late one night and i freaked. take your pc apart and make sure the cables are pushed in from the power supply to the hdd.
OR could be the power supply is going. worst case, hdd went bad |
Main board ( Bios is there ) or power supply. Not the hard drive, bios should try to look for it.
|
loose cables - put your military boots on and kick it - 3 times
|
Man this just happened to my inlaws computer... Guess what I'm going to be doing next weekend. Jesus...
|
open it up and check all the cables. if that doesn't work, take out everything except the board, the cpu, the gpu and a memory stick. if that doesn't help - check the PSU....
|
|
shit, the same thing happened to me few days ago and i still wonder what to do. sometimes it boots and sometimes not.
|
I tried everything and still doesn't work.
Few days before it stopped working, i noticed a high pitch squeeling sound and it was overheating so i added a case fan and the noise went away and didn't overheat anymore. Then everything was working fine untill i put it into standby mode and it never came out. When i hit the fire button all i hear is the fans spinning and i still have a black screen.Im not sure what to do anymore. :Oh crap |
take the floppy disc out.
|
Replace the power supply unit (PSU). They cost about $20 and are easy enough to install.

Make sure you have no lose cables, or accidently disconnected something when fucking around in there. It's easy to do. |

Oh man,the tears are starting to come. :( |
I'm telling you it's your POWER SUPPLY UNIT. Go on, smell the back of your box, where the power cable goes in. You'll smell burnt stink. That means you've blown your PSU. it's simple to fix, and you most likely haven't lost any data.
|
I have NEVER had a cable come loose. I've had computers run for years and nothing has ever caused the cable to just flop out. Sounds the power supply. Get an Enermax. Those things last a while. =)

i had a hdd failure recently, i went on ebay and bought the same hdd, took the printboard off the new hdd and put it on my failed drive and got up and running again.
since we are having this talk, my secondary pc is giving me a signal saying it cannot find config.sys and to load the xp disc and run repair. i did this several times and all it does is get me on to the c drive with a dos prompt, not win xp op system.. any suggestions ? if i re-install xp will i loose the data on the hdd ?? |
Ok fine. Here you go...
http://www.dansdata.com/quickshot018.htm Get one of these. Test PSU. If it works. Get some Kleenex. If not. Replace it. It could be your HDD is fine, but you blew the board. |
The wifes pc did this recently, she'd fried the processor.

Best thing to do is narrow down where the smell is coming from, and there's your problem. Or you can just do it the easy way and buy a new computer. |
look at your motherboard....
You see one light light up that means it is your power supply... You see two small lights then that means it could be your motherboard that is fucked.... or if you only have 1 stick of RAM then it could be ram ... But if you have 2 sticks, then that is your mobo |
Ok well i hooked up a new power supply and it did nothing. Its the same as before with just the fans humming so now it seems like its either my HD or the mobo is toast.
Actually when i hooked up the Power Supply, for the life of me,i couldn't attach the plug that goes into the floppy disk so i left it out and im not sure if that would make a difference. Quote:

i stuck my big nose inside and couldn't make out where the burnt smell was coming from. Im really limited when it comes to installing hardware.i have installed ram, fams, and now power supply although mobo and HD dont look so easy. Bah its my own fault i should have known better when i heard whining noise for 3-4 days and didnt jump on it quickly.Especialy knowing that my puter is 5 years old. Now i have to make a desicion of either taking it the repair guy (i dont like the idea of someone going through a lot of personal info) or just take my lumps and buy a new PC. Vista or XP? i donkt know,im losing my mind. |
Have you tried resetting the CMOS?
|
Hmmm, thats odd.
|
Is the fan on your processor spinning?
Also, I may have missed this but no video displays at all? Could be your video card, or the fan on it. (Fans that fail could give a burning smell. Also they would cause a device to fail from overheating, such as your CPU, Video Card, PSU, etc...) Start the computer with your hand on the top of your hard drive, feel it to see if it spins. |
FUCKN A !!! MY PUTERS BACK IN BUSINESS!! :upsidedow :)
im not sure what did the trick.I have resseted the CMOS as Space Monkey mentioned and also niche25 suggested that it could be my video card,so i took out the Radeon X800 Xl video card and went back to my old card. Was it the video card or CMOS? im not really sure although my puters UP AND RUNNING ! :) THANKS EVERYONE FOR THE HELP! YOU SAVED ME FROM SO MUCH AGGRAVATION..I LOVE YOU FUCKERS :thumbsup :) :) |
Good to hear you're okay now. Damn, talk about some scary shit.
