Star Wars Geeks, I have a question...

So I am watching Stars Episodes IV - VI, and I have a question:

How is it that every single actor in those movies went on to have a successful acting career, except for Luke Skywalker? Did Mark Hammil (sp?) even do a movie after that? Is he making a buttload from those movies and called it quits, or did he just suck as an actor and no one wanted Luke Skywalker in their films?

Which other actors? I can only think of Ford having a successful career. What's her face is around every now and then but has she had a successful overall career?

Yea, Ford was pretty much the only one who came up from all of that.

Harrison Ford, Carrie Fischer, Sir Alec Guinness (granted he was already a great actor before Star Wars), James Earl Jones.

Carrie Fisher:
Lisa Picard is Famous (2001)
Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997)
This Is My Life (1992)
Soapdish (1991)
Drop Dead Fred (1991)
Sibling Rivalry (1990)
Sweet Revenge (1990)
When Harry Met Sally (1989)
The 'Burbs (1989)
Loverboy (1989)
Time Guardian (1989)
Appointment with Death (1988)
She's Back (1988)
Amazon Women on the Moon (1987)
Hollywood Vice Squad (1986)
Hannah and Her Sisters (1986)
From Here to Maternity (1986)
The Man with One Red Shoe (1985)
Garbo Talks (1984)
Frankenstein (1984)
Thumbelina (1982)
Under the Rainbow (1981)
The Blues Borthers (1980)
Mr. Mike's Mondo Video (1979)

I would consider that as being a working or "successful" actor.

You would say those mark her a successful career but Hamill's list doesn't?

I don't count Chewbacca and Darth Vader, having no lines is gay.

Yes, I would, that's why I asked the fucking question moron. TV cameos, and voice for cartoons is not what I am talking about, I am talking about actual roles in actual movies.

maybe hammil is stupid? it could happen . .

ungratefulninja 02-05-2007 08:06 PM

Didn't he mainly go on to do theatre work? Granted, I don't know if that was voluntary or not..

Grapesoda 02-05-2007 08:09 PM

check out george raft, talk about stupid . . turned down 3 giant films:

His career went into a period of decline over the next decade, and Raft achieved a place in Hollywood folklore as the actor who turned down some of the best roles in screen history, most notably High Sierra (he didn't want to die at the end) and The Maltese Falcon (he didn't want to work on a remake of the pre-code version of The Maltese Falcon (1931); both roles made Humphrey Bogart a major force in Hollywood in 1941. He was also reported to have turned down Bogart's role in Casablanca (1942), saying he didn't want to work with "some unknown Swedish broad" (although this story is probably apocryphal).

Approached by director Billy Wilder, he refused the lead role in Double Indemnity (1944), which led to the casting of Fred MacMurray in a towering classic that would have undoubtedly revived Raft's career. His lack of judgment (probably grounded in the fact that he was more or less illiterate, which made judging scripts even more problematic than usual), combined with the public's growing distaste for his apparent gangster lifestyle effectively ended his career as a leading man.

YARGH! I'm so glad I got Star Wars out of me system:

evildick 02-05-2007 08:16 PM

I take it you haven't seen Corvette Summer. Definitely the highlight of his career.

To be fair he does do a shitload of voice-over work. He never really shook the role. Everyone always sees him as Luke. Even when he tried to do other roles he still ended up as the whiny little fucker. (like in Big Red One)

feistybbw 02-05-2007 08:16 PM

Mark Hamill has done a few movies. He was in Jay and Silent Bob, but he mostly does voice work in animation and has for years. He does a ton of it and he's very well known for it and in high demand and I'm sure it makes him a ton of money for a lot less work than appearing in actual movies. Every time an episode airs or reairs the dude gets paid so I wouldn't scoff at it or assume that he'd be more successful if he was a movie star. He's no dummy.

I think he also writes a comic book now too.

cheekycherry 02-05-2007 08:18 PM

Kids eh... Don't you remember Mark's greatest achievement, the moment in his career that truly made his mum proud?

I wasn't putting him down, I was just curious why he didn't really work as an actor much after Star Wars was over. If he makes more money doing voice for animations, that would be a pretty good reason.

cheekycherry 02-05-2007 08:26 PM

Hamill's biggest problem is that he IS Luke Skywalker.

The real deal. He'll not shake it because HE'S REAL!!!!!!!!!!!!

psili 02-05-2007 08:50 PM

Perhaps, though great movies in their own right, Ford had the best role, played the best character and...

well, who actually looks up to

Luke -- "I used to bullseye womp rats in my T-16 back home. They're not much bigger than two meters. "

compared to

Solo -- "Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid. "

--- Thanks IMDB.

He had a movie that pretty much killed his career, I believe it was called Corvette Summer, or something like that.

Didn't he have a really bad accident that took him out of the scene for quite a while? From what I understand, the plastic surgery on his face was pretty bad initially...
