Hostgator so helpful --not

If you want support from your host dont choose Hostgator. Terrible, my site has been down for hours, hardly any help from them.. responses like it will cost money to restore, even though i have the restore files.

I tell them I can restore but it took forever for them to tell me that it wouldnt work cause I dont have root access

They tell me they wont charge if I give them the backup files, I send them the files, wait and wait and wait, contact support again and they tell me that they dont know what technician is working on my case nor can they give me a time frame

Maybe its because I have a porn site, whatever the case I am not happy.

So I thought I just let my frustration out on GFY

baddog 02-03-2007 06:18 PM

no root access? Hope it is a virtual account.

FreeHugeMovies 02-03-2007 06:42 PM

Why would you even signup to a place that nobody knows about?

zoddy 02-03-2007 06:55 PM

People new about it, I actually got it from here, it was more of a test i suppose, a cheap virtual account, my main sites are not with them but I guess you get what you pay for. Thankfully I only have one site with them

Host Gator is actually pretty popular, think Dream Host. Big with small mainstream sites and hobbyists. For an adult business, its best to go with an adult company that can provide quality support and understands that downtime means monies lost.

they could triple their prices and i would fucking still stay!!!

u gotta get a good host or else ur fucked... period.

mikeet 02-03-2007 07:21 PM

I thought about using them a few months back. After talking with one of their sales reps on th phone i changed my mind. The guy was a complete idiot to say the least. I ended up getting a dedicated box from ATCI Hosting and im very happy with the decision.

OzMan 02-03-2007 07:26 PM

About the worst host I ever used..tried them for a couple months to run an RSS2Blog installation at the program creator's recommendation. They didn't have a fucking clue and I spent half the time arguing with them via email...never again

I've never seen them on any boards or heard anyone ever talk about them.

So because you've never heard of them, they're obviously small time, right?

ronbotx 02-03-2007 08:09 PM

First, Hostgator is probably bigger than most of the "adult" hosts that spam this board combined. Just go over to WebHostingTalk forums and you'll see the feedback is strongly positive. They have a huge datacenter at "The Planet"

I have a few small sites hosted on a $10 account, as well funneling my email for several domains through them, and they've been reliable as hell. I've used support for a few minor things, and they've been quick and responsive. However, I would not use their shared accounts for high traffic, high resource, "mission critical" sites. That comment would apply to any shared/virtual host, since the other users on the machine can negatively effect things. My experience has been that HostGator provides a very reliable virtual service given those parameters.

Its unclear whether the server is down, or the problem is with your account. I would take a quick look on their BBS to see if other users are complaining about yuou server. They monitor that BBS pretty closely, and it wouldn't hurt to share your problem there. They do weekly backups, and I believe the restore charge is $15 for that. If you do your own backup using Cpanel, they will restore it for free.

I'm sorry you're having problems, but I can't think of any host I've ever used that doesn't have some.

Axzar 02-03-2007 08:16 PM

I resell Host Gator Hosting and love their service.

We recently had a site go offline. Doh! There was a spam hole in one of our php forms.

We fixed the problem, they had us up and running spam free immediately.

We have also had great luck with them uploading large databases for us. Very quick and responsive IMO. They meet or exceed all my expectations.

bdld 02-03-2007 08:17 PM

host gator is huge and very well known. if your account is new you could get a refund.

zoddy 02-03-2007 08:19 PM

Yes that is where I am at. I have my cpanel restore files, gave it to them and have been waiting for them to restore them, 5 hours so far and ticking, I contacted them 2 hours ago, they could not give me a time frame on the restore and they also could not figure out if there was a technician assigned to my ticket. Very positive responses

Kimo 02-03-2007 09:58 PM

should have used phatservers.com

their support responds quick as shit

open a ticket!!! the name of the technician assigned to the ticket will be on the ticket...that is the best way to deal with hostgator...

i've been using hostgator for a number of sites and their support technicians are very knowledgeable!!!! and their servers are fast as hell...even on a virtual account....whenever i open a ticket the problem is responded to within 2-3 hours...

split_joel 02-03-2007 10:42 PM

Never talk to the guys at live chat they are useless monkeys but the suport guys that you have to email are superb. If I ever need help, advice or something fixed they are on it in two seconds and withing 5 minutes I have what I need fixed - anytime of the day!

I've used several hosts and hostgator are the only ones that have gotten it right in terms of service, cost and uptime. I can't be any more happy with them, shame you are having problems - take comfort in the fact it happens to us all :)

Klen 02-04-2007 08:37 AM

Hostgator is crap, and i constantly say that but people dont wanna listen me :(
Well maybe their dedicated servers are ok but shared hosting there is something which should be avoided at all cost.

I dont know anymore, i have a ticket open it started at urgent now its at critical since last night, its a 10mb site, took them all night to respond when it hit critical so i am not sure about this 5min response:) Anyway I am done bitchin... my fault for going with a cheap solution, no one to blame but myself

zoddy 02-04-2007 07:06 PM

30 hours and ticking, site still hasnt been restore, I talk to them and they esculate the ticket.

First call sent in as urgent
Second call esculated to Critical
Thrid call esculated to Level 3
Four Call esclated to Administration

Just how many levels to these guys have... I will be talking to God himself soon

zoddy 02-05-2007 04:21 PM

Well for those of you that are interested here is my final follow up on Hostgators wonderful service.

It was agreed that since I could not restore the site due to some permission issue that I was to give them the files to restore. I uploaded the files and didnt hear anything, I contacted support they said it was escaluated once again and should be done shortly. Went to bed, woke up next day with a message saying to please upload the file for the SQL Database, which I already did in the last part of the ticket.

I mentioned that it was already uploaded but I uploaded the file requested again. I know they upload because I can see them in the ticket. Went to work came home and still nothing had been done, no updates, nothing. Talked to support again, they said that they would esculate it again and it would be looked into shortly again, I was pretty ticked and said that If I didnt hear from them within the hour I was cancelling.

Didnt hear from them so I just put in my cancel request and emailed the sales for my money back. Thankfully this was a small site and I didnt put my older sites on, I was planning to if hostgator turned out to be a good host but unfortunately they are not.

Dont let the price fool you people, if you ever get in trouble with your site I would not rely on them, perhaps there dedicated service maybe better but I would not take the chance. 51 hours my site was down and not once did someone actually do any work on it.

Lovely

By the way I really like the cat photo:) I think I looked just like that many times
