.1 of a mile can be deadly
 

My wife works for a huge medical company. The company wanted to sign on a doctor from Miami to there network. So this doctor sold him home and moved to the Tampa area.

Well now another doctor in the network sued the new doctor that the company because he opened a office that is within 5 miles of his office. Officially the office he opened was 4.9 miles and in the next county but the contract stated 5 miles.

So the whole thing ends up in court. The doctor that was suing the new doctor got awarded $400k and 25% of his profits from his office every year for the next 5 years plus some other stuff.

To make a long story short the new doctor now will be making $40k less a year then he did before he left Miami. After a month of severe depression he took his life thursday night :(

Yeah its a messed up story. I met the suing doctor a couple of times at different functions. He really is a truly a ass and has that " i am god " complex.

pretty lousy thing to take your life over. its not like he was homeless or addicted to drugs or anything like that. must of been other factors involved.

At least he won't be getting the 25% garnishee for the next 5 years.

A lot of the doctors around here are real pricks too because they know they can get away with it. We are in a small community with a major doctor shortage and once the current ones retire we will be in a real mess. No doctor wants to move here even with big signing bonuses.

The hospital and every health care organization in the area basically has to bow to their every whim.

I don't understand... if the contract clearly stated 5 miles why didn't the new doctor make sure to be outside of the 5 miles? Before you make such a life altering decision shouldn’t you make sure you are fully compliant?

I know what you are saying but come on 4.9 miles and in a different county on top of it all. Its not like this doctor had a lack of patients . He has like 14 offices across central Florida. Nothing but greed i tell you. :disgust

Oh I agree it was very greedy and very callous of the old doctor? but if I was a doctor and I sold my house and moved my business to another locale I?d be damned sure that I was in compliance with the laws. To have such a horrible thing occur to both you and your family over that .1 of a mile that COULD have been averted with just a bit of research just seems so pointless.
