Why is it so difficult to give stuff away?

I am giving $500 worth of services, Python is giving away a grand in cash, and there is so little participation.

You have the post whore contests and they get tons of posts. I don't get it. Is it because contest whores have no real skill or imagination? Or are those contests really getting hit with a lot of bots?

Jace 02-01-2007 03:27 AM

well, you are actually giving away something a real webmaster can use, and with the current tone of gfy the way it is, there aren't many people that can use actual webmaster services around anymore

as for the cash, I have no idea

You may be onto something there.

Jace 02-01-2007 03:30 AM

another observation after checking out the contest

you are giving away 2 months service, what happens after that 2 months? either the person has to pack up and move away or they have to continue and pay the money.....which brings me back to the climate of gfy lately...people are either broke ass newbies who can't afford the hosting, or they are established with another company and don't wanna deal with the move. there doesn't seem to be much middle ground around here lately, the mid-level webmaster, they seem to have all packed up and moved to other boards

Well, if you like the hosting you would stay. I would never move existing sites to a temp server, but I sure might develop others that are just parked somewhere.

Just out of curiosity sake, how many months do you think would pique interest?

I am also giving away an optimized press release (free link building, one way, from a respected PR4 site).

JFK is giving a button on FUBAR for a month. We have tracking software that allows us to know from what site all sales come from. We have had a couple from there. I don't think I ever told JFK that. I was surprised and impressed.

I, personally, would be interested in the hosting, but for someone that is a part timer and not really succeeding all that much 2 months is not really enough to get him/her wanting to try, because after those 2 months are up it is either fail or succeed, and in this biz these days, succeeding is pretty hard for the average newbie

i think the problem comes in with the fact that your contest is geared toward the true professional, but lately on gfy anyone who is actually professional wouldn't be caught dead in a contest thread, there is just so much taboo behind them....your server space is definitely geared to someone that needs that specific thing, and for someone to go out of their way to try and win a contest for hosting I would think they would have to see "6 months" or "1 year", which is probably not all that feasible for you to giveaway

hell, even give them an option of a cash payout instead of the hosting, and I bet more people will bite

At least 12 months. This would give someone time to develop his/her site(s) and make it worth all the hassle.

Gentle_Ben 02-01-2007 06:00 AM

I think there is a general over-saturation of contests on the board as well, which dilutes participation and interest.

nico-t 02-01-2007 06:21 AM

too much hassle, i wouldnt do it

Pretty much, yeah.

fris 02-01-2007 06:52 AM

if the hosting is good enough people will stay.

I couldn't care less if it is uncool to post in content threads, but the fact is I never look at them because so many are going to be won by people (or their bots) who have nothing else to do with their time, except to try to hit post # whatever.

Sure they are not all like that, but in the same way that sometimes the board "characters" may post something remotely intelligent or entertaining, it isn't worth sifting through the dreck for the occasional nugget.

Your competition and Python's have in common is that both required more than just posting inane remarks until the right number comes up. But that's all the audience for competitions here now are expccting and are apparently willing to do.

When the lowest common denominator is catered for too well and too long, that is all you end up with...

A better non-contest hosting package? What in jesus' name does that mean?

Second, reading some of your posts you will not hesitate to slam someone. I find this odd if you?re in a service business and this forum is obviously a resource for you.:2 cents:
yeah, I guess I shouldn't have an opinion

Okay, we will change it. First prize will be twelve months free hosting courtesy of GotWebHost. We are giving away twelve months of our High Bandwidth Virtual 3 plan which gives you 6 gig of storage, and 400 gig of transfer. This has a prize value of $1260.

Better?

The price is much better, but another problem is the contest itself.
"Entries will be judged on whether they make me and goodgirl laugh."
"Entries must include use of any picture with me in it found on FUBARwebmasters"

So really it's just a photochopping contest.. something that most people wouldn't be able to do to save their lives...

Wrong, I also said captioning a pic, creatimg a gif or slideshow would also qualify. I know not everyone has PS skills.

All you need is a little imagination

wyldblyss 02-01-2007 06:16 PM

Honestly, I don't pay too much attention to contest threads, surfers seem to take them over

Pete-KT 02-01-2007 06:17 PM

any contest involving actual work will not get the post whores, plus they have no use for hosting

What he means (of course this is just a guess :winkwink:) is there are better hosting packages out there that do not require posting in a contest or doing anything for that matter. You just place the order.

RSgk11 02-01-2007 06:45 PM

The problem is that "Post Bots" can't win your contest. If you were having a post contest they would be all over you.If you ever take note the same few people win all the contest here!!I think you will have some good entries from your contest just not many/Good Luck

Okay, anyone that would prefer to pay for a better (or lesser) package with us is more than welcome to.

I hope people did not think that was the only way we would host them.

Hotrocket 02-01-2007 07:20 PM

I must have missed the original contest post..can you post the link please?

WiredGuy 02-01-2007 07:25 PM

I personally have better things to do with my time than to play around with photoshop. The posting threads are nice since it only takes a few seconds, when I have to do actual work in photoshop or lookup pics on Fubar, that's too time consuming and not worth it.

Being a contest whore myself, the reason I didn't jump on this one was because I don't really need hosting - my sites are all established, and the thought of having to move boxes again makes me want to slowly slice off all my skin and jump into a swimming pool filled with gasoline. It's that much fun. That said, in the past month I've won a total of $950 in photoshop contests. *shrug*

Photoshop is paying for college, whereas free hosting would probably just go unused, regardless of how awesome the deal is.

EXPORT 02-03-2007 10:28 AM

in do not want to make a hosting in us

You must think you are pretty good to assume that you would win first prize. :1orglaugh

Tell you what, if you enter, and win first prize I will let you have an optimized press release instead.

No one doesn't need link building.
