People who have a large gap between their front teeth...a question about them

With today's dentistry being what it is, I always wonder why they don't just get it fixed.

Why don't they get it fixed?

I had one or two girls answer modelling ads years ago who had this look, one had it pretty bad.

But last night on American Idol there was an extremely large woman who you could drive an SUV through the gap in her teeth trying to impress the judges, and I again found myself wondering... why? Why don't these people just go have that gap fixed?

In most cases it would severely improve their look.

Anyone know?

djroof 01-31-2007 02:35 PM

Maybe costs much?

madawgz 01-31-2007 02:36 PM

it can cost alot of money to fix your teeth

CDSmith 01-31-2007 02:36 PM

It can cost a lot to fix your tits too, your hair loss, your sagging butt....

but people do it.

But so many choose to leave the gap in place.

Well that girl who won America's next top model had a gap between her teeth, and she got it fixed a bit on the show. However she didn't want to at first because she said that was who she was! I guess some people believe that certain quirks are what makes them special? As long as they are happy it doesn't really matter does it?:)

My Dad has one - as did I, my brother, my son, and now my brother's daughter. IBM fixed mine and my brother's and I fixed my son's. I'm sure the company my brother works for will fix my nieces :) It's not a problem as far as bite goes so if that's all that's wrong, no biggie. My Dad turns 71 next month and has all his teeth.

One of my best friends is a flight attendant for American Airlines and she has a gap. She's always had it. Braces were never and have never been recommended and it's part of "her". She grew up in a wealthy family and her husband's a stock broker, so money's not the problem.

Lauren Hutton had a very successful modeling career with her front tooth gap :)

Adds character... plus it makes it really easy for me to floss. ;)

kilotoons 01-31-2007 02:48 PM

The only person it has ever seriously irritated me on was the lady from Trading Spouses, the "god freak" lady. Her gap was extremely huge and she was already annoying and ugly to begin with, it really did not help that she had that gap.

Some people look okay with it.

ridikuloz 01-31-2007 02:50 PM

don't they have to get braces? that means $3000 out of your pocket and another 2 years of having them on. I guess laziness?

Peaches 01-31-2007 02:52 PM

I guess this is kinda like asking why all women with little boobs don't get boob jobs. If you're happy with what you are, why change? :)

Sharky01276 01-31-2007 02:58 PM

Most gaps are now fixed with veneers, these are porcelin and cost any where from 1k - 2k per tooth. A typical gap can take between 4 and 8 veneers, plus the work. Results normally done within 3 weeks. It is expensive and not well known about

I was rather looking at it the other way.... that if what some of you have said is true, that people are happy with who they are and the way they look as far as the gap goes, then why can't they also be happy with the size of their boobs? Both are cosmetic features that are part of one's overall "look".

I suppose I just find it odd in a way that people are willing to sink thousands into hair transplants and boob jobs and such but are perfectly happy to leave their tooth gap as is. Like everything else in life it is of course a personal choice/preference, but it does raise some puzzling questions, at least from where I sit.

I have always thought she'd have looked a hell of a lot better had she gotten that gap fixed.

i find a little gap sexy on girls

NaughtyRob 01-31-2007 08:49 PM

I have that, and my situation is that they would need to insert two fake teeth to push the two fronts together. Fuck that....I'll wait until I can just get it cosmetically fixed. Lots of $$.

huey 01-31-2007 08:51 PM

Letterman
Strahan

They can afford it but it suits them.

TG Rebecca 01-31-2007 09:03 PM

i love belladonna's gap. :)

CDSmith 01-31-2007 09:05 PM

Letterman gets a pass. His gap is legendary.

:D

Actually there are cheaper alternative to the width of the gap. My dentist told for a few $100 he could fix my gap and would take less than 30 minutes to do so. I refused to do it.

Don't you know about the Wife of Bath?

Hillbilly Chic is making a comeback!

SmokeyTheBear 01-31-2007 09:43 PM

hahaha you know you watch too much tv when ....

When i saw this thread the first 2 people i thought of was the chick on american idol and the chick on trading spouses ( god warrior )

Most of the time i dont notice it , but on odd people i guess i do .. fact is you dont hear about or notice people who get it fixed but you do notice and hear about other things.

Madonna has made herself the most successful female pop star on the planet ... and she's got a massive gap in her teeth. I honestly don't think it matters as much as you think

I was just about to post the same thing....my god that woman has the biggest gap I have ever seen

webmasterchecks 01-31-2007 09:51 PM

you can say the same about noses, or ears, or skin, or weight, or a dozen other things, some people have disgustingly yellow teeth

they dont care, dont think about it, or cant afford it

let me tell you that they are MUCH more unlikely to do this if they are married

Jewel has a tooth out of place too and she doesn't get it fixed. I'm sure she could afford too. Maybe they are just not vain enough to care about it. This is me, take it or leave it!!

Believe me when I tell you, Madonna's gap (at least the one between her teeth) isn't all that wide at all. Compared to some I've seen recently her's is tiny, and at the very least in the the tolerable zone.

Like I said, you could drive an SUV through the one in that chick's grill on American Idol the other night. No lie.

Nicolette 01-31-2007 10:24 PM

some people feel their diastema or 'gap' adds character to their smile, or are simply comfortable in their own skin, or in this case, teeth, ha

many options exist in today's dentistry to fill in the gap between the two upper front teeth. depends on the person's expectations of treatment outcome, including their idea of the final product and what they are willing to financially afford. with good communication between the 'patient' and dentist, a new look can be achieved at a price that makes even the patient smile!

my 'other' job....topless dentistry
ha, just kidding, not topless....just dentistry

EBORG9 01-31-2007 11:52 PM

I have actually seen the X-Ray of my grill, and my facial, or whatever bone structure that is, actually will continue to push my front teeth apart. Braces will do nothing to fix it.
I would need face reconstruction surgery, or have to take out the entire top bridge and put in "Falsies".
I never had a problem getting women or work, so fuck all that pain.
