Problems with whore/slut labels?

Just wanted to get some more opinions on this.

I'm setting up a sort of porn directory, and I feel uncomfortable including sites that refer to the women shown as "whores" and "sluts". I find the terms degrading, and I also think they're just unnecessary.

I know it's an old lament, but why do women who enjoy sex have to be labeled whores and sluts?

I realize that the porn industry, while complicit in propagating this view, is not the source. Many, many people in society view sexually promiscuous women as slutty, with all the dirty/immoral connotations that come along with the word.

To be clear, I know there are women who love the dirty talk - I'm one of them! I'm not talking about women who embrace and enjoy being called slut or whore in the middle of some hot action. I also know there are communities who embrace the word "slut" in a sex-positive sense, defining the word as someone who likes a lot of sex (a la "The Ethical Slut"). But to me, this isn't what these sites are doing. When a banner screams out "WATCH THESE FILTHY SLUTS GET FILLED IN EVERY HOLE" - that hardly seems to endorse a positive view of female sexuality.

Am I making too much of this? Are "whore" and "slut" just used as empty filler jargon for webmasters who are sick of writing "women" or "girls"? Or are these sites hypocritical and dumb, getting sexual pleasure from women's actions but then calling them derogatory names for participating?

Are you offended by the use of "slut", "whore" etc.? Do you shrug your shoulders and accept it as dumbass porn stuff? Do you like it?

Thanks for any and all responses.

Why does this business HAVE to use those words?

interracialtoons 01-31-2007 12:15 PM

It's more like the words aren't used to describe men as much as they should.

And yes, it's way over used in the industry, but consider all the dumb assed GED holding idiots that own websites. That's the depth of their thought process. They can't come up with any better words besides the 50 or so they know how to spell.

Halcyon 01-31-2007 12:21 PM

Certain words, images, and ideas hit us on a reptilian level.

It is those reptilian triggers tha fuel this industry and make people go for their wallets.

Do you have to play that game? Certainly not. But you will be dealing with a harder-to-market-to population, for sure.

Personally, I am fine with any languange as long as it is WITHIN the context of fantasy.

"In this next scene, Jenny is going to play a dirty whore for a degradation fantasy." = cool
"In this next scene I'm gonna humiliate some dumb bitch." = not as cool.

Unfortunately, I'm sure the first will sell better.

Words mean different things to different people. It's hard to weigh how the words were intended against the effects they have and the outlooks they promote.

What sort of outlook do you think calling women who love sex "whores" promotes? Are the effects of those words positive or negative?

Hey, hey, hey...

Women can love sex and still remain not willing to suck 10 cocks on camera while getting DP'ed and eating enough semen to fill a beer mug. However, if I were to meet the woman who got paid to do that scene, I probably could not help myself to think "Oh man, what a dirtbag whore"

Most guys that I know who like porn, REALLY like my site www.newpornchicks.com and laugh their asses off at how "dumb" they think the girl's myspace pages are. I've got a bunch of fan mail so far.

I think a lot of the appeal of porn for men is being able to just use a woman and toss her aside, that is a huge selling point to porn. Can you think of more than 1 site that does that? Think of the BIGGEST site and what they do at the end of each video. It just goes to show that men WANT women who are whores for sex, but when it comes to friendship or even basic respect, they don't show any.

Being a whore... well... in a lot of ways you are enslaving yourself to a lifestyle in which you'll get treated like a whore.

What I'm saying is, how many guys would treat you like a queen after you've given a blowjob with a toilet seat around your neck?

Perhaps the "whore / slut" labels are justified.

Perhaps for having these views, maybe the label of "asshole" is justified for me, too.

Some may say, do not judge a book by it's cover. The truth is, the cover exists to judge they book by.

Personally I just don't give a shit. I'll call a porn chick a whore, and then the next minute call some islamic fundamentalist a whacko for their beliefs that a woman should remain covered up. I think I fall somewhere in a moral grey area and I'm happy with that. :yinyang

What about a guy who bangs 10 chicks while getting rimmed? Is he a filthy slut too?

In terms of ethics, do you find it ethical to think of women as "dirtbag whores" yet profit from their dirtbag whorish actions? I see the point you're making, that someone full of gallons of cum could objectively be described as slutty. However, isn't that passing a moral judgment on those actions? And if you see the slutty behavior as bad enough to warrant a derogatory term, then again, why profit from it?

Agent 488 01-31-2007 01:58 PM

why are hamburgers described as tasty, juicy, yummy etc. it's degrading to the hamburger, but what are you going to do?

Roald 01-31-2007 02:08 PM

its all to be seen in the context as said. If I see a girl sucking 50 dicks and getting a tripple anal while fisting a shemale midget, than yeah I would promote that as a slut.

Now if I see a classy video, for example jenna posing nude playing with herself I would call that a babe.

Its all in the context, don't want to say slut or whore, don't promote the typical slut/whore sites. Simple as that

latinasojourn 01-31-2007 02:13 PM

the marketing of erotica has many niches, and sub niches.

the use of connotations that degrade, i.e. "whore, slut" do sell to a certain niche. in fact there is a huge microcosm of surfers that get off on images that degrade others (usually women).

this subgroup is particularly large online, and always will be. a large group of lonely, solitary wankers exists every day pounding their meat and looking at the girls they could never get in real life. many of these guys are resentful of women and they will buy fantasies that show power over women.

after all, who signs up for a website that shows a girl on her knees with some sort of dental appliance holding her mouth open so a bunch of guys can blow their loads down her throat.

these are the guys that never got laid in high school, and they are a big group on the internet. normal guys are in the real world banging beaver and getting their rocks off. the guys that can't get laid our home alone in the basement jacking off and buying porn memberships to meatholes, etc etc.

most normal men love women and get off in more traditional ways.

and this more mainstream approach is larger in the marketplace, but more competitive commercial.

it is true that there are some "whores and sluts" in real life---but that is not the majority of ordinary women, and the majority of males do not respond to this depiction of degradation.

but many do.

psych 101 class dismissed.

My girlfriend wouldn't date me if I was content, and her family wouldn't like me, either!

How does a person that works in a bullet factory sleep at night?

I don't think you'll ever stop porn. No. I don't see a need to, either. You'll always have a balance between people who are chaste and morally pure, and then you'll have people who will be willing to sell their wife into a slap happy scene just so they can get high later that night.

That's the fuckin' way she goes, Rick.

I've read a lot of bios of porn chicks, and I've known a couple. One girl, in fact, my old friend Amanda, ended up a prostitute. She met some greasy asshole who got her into hard drugs. Mind you, I like drugs too, but like everything in life, moderation is the key. Her new boyfriend and his friends were a bunch of addicts and got her addicted. Well, what does a pretty girl do when she's addicted to drugs? Sell her body. Anyways, she was a virgin until 19, and she was always so proud of the fact that she wasn't some big skank like her cousin who had a baby at 17. Then the downward spiral hit and she ended up in a world of shit. She overdosed and was found dead in a seedy burnaby hotel.

I'm sure there are some girls who get into porn because of stories like the above. Maya Hills seemed to get into it from the lack of any male figures in her life, etc etc. My friend Amanda never had a male role model or anyone to tell her right from wrong, in fact, her alcoholic mother encouraged her to strip.

I don't claim to have all the answers, and I don't claim to be the moral compass of GFY or of anything. Much like the wise man above, it's up to everyone to decide how far they're willing to push their own boundries. As a human being though, being judgemental is woven into the fabric of my existence. People are judgemental. You cannot escape from this. You are judgemental and there's no way, no possible way around this.

I guess that's why I can shrug and be like "dirtball" while making profit off of it.

It's impossible to promote porn in a socially conscious way?

Being involved in porn means you have to promote content you personally find offensive?

So all those sales we make are all to people who are home alone on their basement? And only those who can not get laid?

Now seriously don't you think a huge ammount of people who join don't have a fantasy besides their "normal" sexlife. Or are just horny bastards who need some extra wanking besides the normal everyday sex?

Please tell me if I am wrong when I think the most people buying memberships are just average people like you and me. Well maybe not like you cause you probably have a "normal" sexlife right ;)))

I think it involves having to know what will sell?

Most of the time I don't even preview the stuff I put on galleries and on my site. Just chop it up, find a couple good thumbnails to show the action, and bam, sales roll in.

Pornography appeals to the most basic instincts of your mind, much like walking passed a bakery when you're hungry. I don't sample the baked goods, I just care how it smells outside in front of the store.

Did that make sense?

Be prepared to be broke.

You dislike the words whore and slut? So I'm assuming you have other dislikes?

So are you prepared to filter through all of your sponsors/programs content to make sure that women are not degraded in any way or that the words whore and slut are not mouthed? If not ... do not promote hardcore porn.

Just promote nice docile solo girl sites. Less competition for the rest.

But then again I still go back to questioning why you are even considering promoting porn? Why not use the same skill and drive and put it into mainstream? You are obviously not ready for this...plus theres no money left anyways. Move on.

I love sexy porn, and I want to be able to share it with others. Maybe it's naive, but I believe there's a market out there of intelligent, well-adjusted people who would like some quality porn.

I don't plan on promoting only sites that I find sexy; that's obviously far too limiting. I'm fine with stuff I can vaguely understand but would never want to do (consensual golden showers, for example). I'm fine with most stuff where the participants are enjoying whatever sexual activity is portrayed. I just don't think the women in the scene should be called derogatory names for it.

there are tons of sites that have been catering to that market for years. look around.

bausch 01-31-2007 02:51 PM

Also, I don't care if other people are whorish cause it's their lives, I only care when it affects me personally like if my significant other had a "whorish past".

I don't have time to judge people I don't know cause I don't care for them, but if you were to ask my opinion if someone who is promiscous is considered a whore or a slut, I would have to say yes. This goes for everyone including people who aren't in porn.

That doesn't mean that I think there's something wrong about being a whore but it's just a fact. Come on now, Rocco is a guy and he is a TOTAL slut!

If other people want to fuck around a lot that's great for them! It doesn't affect me and I don't care.

I only care about things that affect me directly like a significant other who had a promiscous past (I believe that past behaviour is indicative of future behaviour. If it happened before it's likely to happen again!)

I don't think it's wrong if people wanna be whores, whatever makes them happy, but that doesn't take away from the facts. Why sugarcoat the facts just so people can feel better? I'm not here to make people feel good about themselves. I'm extremely blunt.

And when I say "repulsive and disgusting" I ONLY mean that in terms of people I would date (like non-porn people). I have respect for adult actors and actresses and the jobs they choose. I meant "disgusting" in terms of someone I would consider dating, I am very sensitive about the person that I'm with "non dirty" but that's a personal issue and has nothing to do with this topic.

I mainly think ANYONE in porn or not regardless of sex , who screws around, is just whorish.

There is definitely a niche for "intellectual porn" and people doing that successfully and making money off of it, but I would concur here that it is harder to get these people to pull out their wallets. Because they tend to be more intellectual in just about everything, not just their porn. :1orglaugh

My suggestion would be that if you are going to market to this niche, and make no mistake, "socially conscious intellectual porn" is a niche, not mainstream, that you load up you sites with stuff they will actually pull out their wallets for, quality and unique sex toys, retro porn sites with real retro content, perhaps a quality dating service, unique cam niches -- those are the things that sell good on one of the sites I do that's within the niche you are talking about. And good luck! :thumbsup

Boobzooka 01-31-2007 04:41 PM

I'll come straight out and say I don't like a lot of the porn I see lately, because it isn't portrayed as something positive. I like girls. I don't want to watch them being mistreated. That doesn't mean I need it all wrapped up in womens lib with a side of bullshit, but geez, a girl ought to be able to suck a dick without being treated like some sort of pariah. Seriously, I have more respect for the "slut" than the guy who wants to put a toilet seat on her head and piss in her mouth. With all the swearing and choking, some of the stuff being shot today looks more like a scuffle at the end of COPS than a sex scene. Sure it's fantasy and they've got every right to produce it, free speech, consenting adults, blah blah blah, but you don't have to do that. There's still plenty of money to be made without degradation.

JamesXR 02-02-2007 03:27 PM

I'm a little late to this post, but it seems to me that all of the slut and whore-ism has to do with a girl's self respect. In the real world outside of sex-positive communities and porn there are girls who will sleep with anyone or do anything in a pointless search for acceptance. They're giving away everything because they have no self worth. For fat, ugly, and obnoxious dudes those girls might be very appealing because they might actually go for them.
At the same time it seems that there are some porn stars who can do the dirtiest things but seem in control of their lives and fully aware of their self worth. They'll do the dirtiest things on their terms.
A guy who will sleep with any girl no matter how fat and ugly will be seen by his friends as a whore.
