Justice Department New Priorities ===== PORN

Justice Department New Priorities, Not New Prosecutors
Fox News presented a report on Tuesday whereby the US Department of Justice had asked seven U.S. attorneys across the country to step down from their respective positions. Some have suggested this was a politically motivated move (see full article here)

"The Bush administration counters that these U.S. attorneys were fired because their priorities were out of line with administration policy. Specifically, the DOJ told the New York Times that the prosecutors were being replaced 'based on a review of their performance in carrying out [Attorney General Alberto] Gonzales's violent crime priorities.'

"Given their larger budgets and investigative manpower, their federal jurisdiction, and their detachment from local affairs, one would think that investigating public corruption should among the highest priorities of U.S. attorneys. Long, expensive corruption investigations are generally too costly and too burdensome for local law enforcement to handle ? not to mention the fact that local police officials may sometimes work for the very people who need to be investigated.

"The Justice Department is correct in one respect. The position of U.S. attorney is inherently political. New federal prosecutors are appointed by the president, and he's naturally going to appoint attorneys who share his values and views on crime.

"All of this grows even more troubling when you consider what the priorities of the current Justice Department actually are. Attorney General Gonzalez himself, for example, has that the "top priority" of his tenure at the Justice Department would be, of all things, the prosecution of pornography. Not child pornography, mind you. Regular, adult porn--the kind starring and bought, produced, and sold by consenting adults."

Fox News also brought up the recent surge in online gambling complaints filed by the DoJ.

"Earlier this month, federal officials arrested the founders of Neteller, an overseas online payment processor, while they were in the U.S. to switch planes. They were arrested because Neteller was allowing its U.S. customers to use the service with online gambling sites. It's the third time U.S. officials have arrested foreign citizens in a U.S. airport on online gambling charges, despite the fact that in all three cases, the suspects were citizens and residents of foreign countries where online gambling is perfectly legal."

the porn whip is cracked by both republicans and democrats, the only difference is that republicans have no issue letting you know they are cracking it, democrats do it quietly

This is nothing new. It is common knowledge that they were forming a task force to attack porn before the 9/11 attacks but then after the attacks they shifted their priorities to terrorism and keeping the country safe (where they should have always been) now that Bush's presidency is winding down and he is officially a lame duck he is working hard to regain the christian conservative base that put him in office twice, but then abandoned the party this last November and by all accounts is very unhappy with him and the republicans in general. I would imagine we see more pandering towards them in the next couple of years in hopes that they will return and support whoever the republican nominee for president is.

It's hard to say. I know that the Bush administration has come out against it. I think they feel it would make finding porn easier for people. You could just type in anyname.xxx and get porn and I think they know that they would have a hard time passing a law that would block all of .xxx sites since adult companies could then argue that parents (or anyone that wanted to) could easily set up a filter that would block access to any and all .xxx sites thus putting the control right in the consumers hands. They could also say that ISPs could start offering people the option of blocking .xxx domains if they wanted to.

Yeah I think they'd gladly see all porn on a seperate domain but the problem *for them* with .xxx is that it's described as voluntary.

Obviously we fear that it could be made mandatory... while they fear that even if they wanted to make it mandatory, perhaps they wouldn't succedd... and by making it voluntary they are only legitimizing porn :upsidedow

such a complex and kinda ironic situation, heh

Yes. Washington is a CESSpool. What this administration has done to America IS pornographic.

The word "pornography" comes from the Greek for writing about prostitutes.

exactly. If it is left to be a voluntary thing, there will still be porn out there on many.coms and, like you said, it legitimizes porn. So far every law that has been passed as an effort to censor porn has failed, the last thing they want is for it to be recognized as a legitimate part of the internet.

tony286 01-31-2007 04:39 PM

THe reason their lawyers wont go after adult porn because it will be pretty close to impossible to get a conviction. Like or not its part of society and with what 15 billion in sales most people who could sit on a jury have watched it and enjoyed.
