We really piss on ourselves in this industry
My sister is calling me, she got spyware on her sons computer.
He's underage and now getting porn popups all over. She cant get rid of the spyware, and now he can't use his computer. He's mentally disabled and wouldnt know to go to porn sites to get this spyware, it just went on his computer from wherever. And she monitors him anyways. And another thing is fucking Windows Defender wont install, its needs this plugin and that plugin and she cant install it. I have her using adaware and spybot S&D, but thats not going to get rid of everything. She didnt know any of these programs. Imagine the millions of people that cant use their computer and getting porn popups when they didnt want it. Im so pissed right now |
I don't think you'll ever stop spyware, but shunning the companies that allow traffic from it is a big step. What were the ads for?
|
thank zango for the majority of aff ads

"i can protect you little boy. me and my new TLD .xxx are going to save your life." ROFL seriously though, i am sorry and i feel for the child. if i had a kid i wouldnt even use thier computer. not with the business i am in. i'd have to have a completely seperate one. i am also not accusing your sister of looking at porn. there is alot of crossover with games, and anything that says free. teach her that FREE on the internet means "you are agreeing to us installing something on your pc" in return. nothing is free on the web. nothing. have her download spybot and adaware, thats a good place to start. |
I charged a guy $180 an hour one time to rid his computer of Spyware, and porn pop ups. Using a bunch of free utilities.
Then I finished off with a complete virus scan and sat there until it was done...on the clock. Oh did I mention that I had 2 programs open, which really slowed it down tremendously. And I am not a comp tech. Don't worry, the guy was a prick. I don't screw over good people. Still not a bad way to spend a Sun afternoon during baseball season. |
A teacher is facing 40 years in jail because of this exact thing.
The cops should track down the spyware and charge the one who spread it with 40 years. |
that sounds fucked, why not just format the comp?

Enough about me and my exploits, don't the parental controls offer any kind of filtering. I have never used them but isn't that what they are for?
Also, doesn't MSN messenger, have that option where she can give you permission to "take control" of her computer, so that you can help her from home? Lastly, that ms protector just requires you accept the active x control, and you have to be using IE, and you have to have all of the service packs installed, and your version of windows must be verified,....never mind I see what you are saying,...fuckin' Gates! You know if they are serious about protecting children, it should be a one step download, even if it is a pirated copy of windows All of that shit should be free! You shouldn't have to go through what your sister is going through |

2. She shouldnt have to reformat her pc. I know thats the best answer but it sucks that innocent people get fucked like this when they were just using the internet. |

As adult webmasters, we should all be labelling our porn sites and posting links to help parents protect their pc's, as well.
Of course, this won't help parents stop their kids from installing "free emoticons" that install Zango in the background - but that isn't porn related anyway. |

might have to reformat the ol' computer.
thats horrible though, i agree with you |
People need to learn that you can't just click "yes" and "i agree" and "next" to shit they aren't reading.
"There's nothing free on the web" doesn't cut it. It's common sense, and it goes with the age-old adage "there's no such thing as a free lunch". |

You know that. I got spyware once form visiting a lyrics website. I didnt agree to anything, my whole computer just got slow and next thing I knew I has tons of spyware. I had to reformat to get rid of it all |
Have her download WebRoot's Spysweeper. The only EFFECTIVE spyware removal tool out there. IMHO, of course.
As for the issue of the industry fucking itself up..... Whenever you get an industry where people, with minimal to decent effort, can make a lot of money, you'll always get a few that will push the boundaries. Unfortunately, it ends up fucking the honest players as well. I share your concern since webmasters are trapped between the inefficacy of self-regulation and the iron hand of govt regulation. |

Start with all the free shit out there LOL |

POpping porn with no age verification on ubderaged kids Ouch Hey if anything you would get something. Great Legal Extortion they would settle |
It's been said time and again..
We (the industry as a whole) are our own worst enemies. :2 cents: |
That is not nice. she will probably have to format the disk :(
Or may be there is some other way. |
When I fix my neighbours spyware problems, the best solution is a reformat.
and if you a computer for work, never let kids use it, thats just asking for troubles |
