MTV News reports that Jack Sparrow himself is in talks to play Freddie Mercury in a movie being developed by Robert De Niro?s Tribeca Productions.

I have to agree with who there, from 21 jump street to Edward scissorhands and finally movies like blow and Pirates of the Carribean.... He mastered his rolls in each.

I am not sure he is the ideal casting for the role, but then again what are the options?

They need a top actor for the role, but who else can play Freddy Mercury without looking overacted and fake ?

Im inclined to scream "boooooo!".

If he can pull it off as well as Val Kilmer pulled off Morrison, then i'll regret booing, but i really dont think that johnny depp will do a decent/good job. I really dont think hes that good an actor, and i think more people would agree if they started thinking about the roles he have had.

Only roles i kinda liked him in was Gilbert Grape really, and that wasnt a very "difficult" role.

And before casting him to play the greatest modern musical genious, lets try to remember what Johnny did in Crybaby. If that movie hadnt featured Traci Lords and Iggy Pop, i would have shot myself in the face when i watched it.

Not trying to be negative, i just dont think Johnny Depp is that good an actor and i think its obvious when hes given more demanding roles : )

And i think the role of Freddie Mercury deserves a great actor. Im hoping that if they will make the movie they will cast someone 'better' and less known really.

no way... you really think so? for starters, when it comes to character acting, Penn is fairly average. Think Nicholas Cage... technically great actor, bu the same guy no matter what the roll is.

He doesn't look like Mercury but he is a perfect actor . May be it is a good idea.

I agree its not as bad as Nicholas Cage, but its still true.

Pirates movies, which takes a lot from how he played his "Eccentric Noble" type character.

Sleepy Hollow, Corpse Bride, Charlie & Chocolate Factory, (Secret Window), From Hell, Ninth Gate.

And his "hurt emotional guy" roles. Crybaby, Scissorhands, Chocolat and more according to my girlfriend. I couldnt stand him in those roles, so i stopped watching those type movies :)

In general i think it was hard for him to shake 21 Jump Street.

And in restrospect, you were probably sarcastic in your post so i just made a dufus out of meself :)

As a HUGE Freddy fan, I would have to say NO. I don't think the camparison is strong enough. But, Johnny Depp has a way of making a role his own and really becoming convincing. So.. who knows.

Also remember such films as "Ed Wood" etc. I can understand that it is your opinion and that you only enjoyed him in a couple of flicks, where I on the other hand have enjoyed every single Depp movie and thought that he was fantastic.

I disagree with you on the "Cry Baby" flick. That was an awesome movie, with or without Tracy Lords and Iggy...come on..."Hatchet Face?" LOL

I personally think that Depp will be able to pull off this character better than anyone else out there. But again, that is my opionion and I am glad to see that others share that with me :)

I have to agree, he is one of the best at becoming his character..Bad Boys, Fast Times as Ridgemont High, Mystic River, Colors, I could go on forever. But this roll fits Depp much better for sure.

But Freddie isnt a 'character' :) Anyway, i will probably regret my "booo" (which i was hesitant about giving in the first place :) ), im just a very big Queen fan and i wasnt too hot on when George Michael tried to pretend he was Freddie either. We probably have different expectations :)

I must remind you that i didnt say Depp is "the worst" or "not the best", i just said i dont think hes that good. I dont agree that hes one of the two best actors of their generation either. I think Cuba Gooding Jr is way better fx. Hell, i even think Kevin Spacey is better and more vertasile.

My all-time favorite is William DaFoe (or is it spelled Willem DaFoe?) though.

And if you mean funny men, then ali G, Will Ferrel, Mike Myers, Carrey or Stiller are all superior to Adam Sandler imo (even though sandlers song "Secret" still have a special place in my heart).
